Álava distributes Basque language grants with local media as protagonists

The Provincial Council of Álava has made public the grants awarded during the fourth quarter of the 2025 financial year by the Department of Equality, Basque and Governance, in compliance with Provincial Law 11/2016, of October 19, on Grants of the Historical Territory of Álava. The list is published in the Official Gazette of the Historical Territory of Álava number 97, of August 26, 2026, within the Provincial Council’s announcements section.

The call, processed by the Directorate of Basque and Open Government, distributes funds among media outlets, city councils, cuadrillas (regional councils), associations, and collectives, as well as aid for students and Basque language teaching centers. The bulk of the allocation is destined for linguistic socialization within the territory.

Basque-language media, the main beneficiaries

The allocation for the promotion of local and regional Basque-language media concentrates the two largest individual grants of the quarter:

• Arabako Alea: 168,552.06 euros
• Aiaraldea koop. elkartea: 153,951.94 euros

Both are granted under budget item 25201. G/335251/47900250 “Basque media grant,” with the aim of promoting local and regional Basque-language press during 2025.

City councils and cuadrillas

The grant allocation for city councils and cuadrillas for Basque language activities distributes aid to dozens of local entities, with amounts ranging from 390.29 euros for Peñacerrada to 31,402.55 euros for the County of Treviño. Notable beneficiaries include:

• Aramaio City Council: 18,201.08 euros
• Amurrio City Council: 11,670.17 euros
• Llodio City Council: 10,210.87 euros
• Ribera Baja City Council: 6,768.15 euros
• Montaña Alavesa Cuadrilla: 7,801.63 euros

Additionally, the six cuadrillas of the territory receive 9,000 euros each for Basque promotion activities in 2025, along with 6,000 euros for the County of Treviño.

Associations, collectives, and education

The grant allocation for associations and collectives finances dozens of entities dedicated to socialization in Basque, including:

• “Kakoriko” Association: 15,840.23 euros
• Aiaraldeko Euskalgintzaren Kontseilua: 8,448.95 euros
• IKASLAN Álava: 5,840.23 euros
• Lazarraga elkartea: 5,840.24 euros
• Alavese Basque Pelota Federation: 4,200.00 euros

In the educational field, 100,905.00 euros are granted to students from different Basque teaching centers for activities promoting the study of the language in the 2025-2026 academic year, and funding is provided for displaced classrooms for Basque learning in the territory and the Treviño enclave, with Euskaraz koop. elkartea (25,909.18 euros) as the main recipient.

Relevance for the territory

These grants consolidate the network of agents that sustain linguistic socialization in Álava, from the regional press in Basque to the city councils, cuadrillas, and associations that organize daily activities in the Basque language. Publication in the official bulletin guarantees transparency in the distribution of public funds and allows citizens to know the destination of the allocations intended for the normalization of Basque in the historical territory.
