Por FactBox Admin

The Rector of the University of Oviedo has agreed to the renewal of part of his rectoral team through two resolutions published in the Official Gazette of the Principality of Asturias (BOPA) number 167, dated August 28, 2026. Through the Resolution of August 24, 2026, two vice-rectors are dismissed and, in parallel, Juan Manuel Marchante Gayón is appointed as Vice-Rector for Students, Studies, and Teaching, a significant transition in the academic leadership.

Both decisions are adopted by virtue of the powers conferred upon the Rector by Article 65 of the Statutes of the University of Oviedo, approved by Decree 77/2024, of December 5, of the Principality of Asturias. The dismissals become effective on August 31, 2026, while the new appointment takes effect the following day, September 1, 2026, coinciding with the start of the academic year.

Dismissals in the Rectoral Council

The dismissal resolution, with code 2026-07164, expresses gratitude for the services rendered by the two members of the Rectoral Council who leave their positions effective August 31, 2026:

  • Alfonso Joaquín López Muñiz, until now Vice-Rector for Students and Employability.
  • Juan Manuel Marchante Gayón, until now Vice-Rector for Studies and Teaching.

New Appointment

The appointment resolution, with code 2026-07166, designates Juan Manuel Marchante Gayón as Vice-Rector for Students, Studies, and Teaching, a position that unifies the competencies of the two previous vice-rectorates. The appointment becomes effective on September 1, 2026.

The new vice-rector thus assumes a strategic area that groups student support, study planning, and teaching, at a key moment in the university calendar.

Regulatory Framework

Both the dismissal and the appointment are based on Article 65 of the Statutes of the University of Oviedo, approved by Decree 77/2024, of December 5, of the Principality of Asturias, which regulates the Rector’s powers to configure his governing team. The resolutions, signed in Oviedo/Uviéu on August 24, 2026, are published in the Authorities and Personnel section of the BOPA.
