The University of Murcia appoints María José Vilar García as Professor of Contemporary History

The University of Murcia has appointed María José Vilar García as University Professor (Catedrática de Universidad) in the field of knowledge of Contemporary History, the highest academic rank in the Spanish university system. This is established by the Resolution of September 1, 2026, signed by Rector J. Samuel Baixauli Soler and published in the Official Gazette of the Region of Murcia (BORM) number 207, dated September 8, 2026, in section I, page 20434.

The appointment follows the competitive access process convened by the University of Murcia itself through the Resolution of April 30, 2026 (published in the BOE on May 13, 2026), for the provision of a position within the Body of University Professors. The position is assigned to the Department of Modern, Contemporary, American History and Social and Political Thought and Movements, with position code 110781.

A regulated selection process

The resolution is issued in exercise of the powers conferred by Article 50 of Organic Law 2/2023, of March 22, on the University System, and other concordant provisions. The procedure was carried out based on the proposal submitted on July 22, 2026, by the competition’s selection committee, after verifying that the interested party met the requirements established in the second clause of the call.

Effects and deadlines of the appointment

The appointment shall take full effect upon the corresponding assumption of office, which must take place within a maximum period of 20 business days counting from the day following the publication of the resolution in the Official State Gazette. Against the resolution, which exhausts administrative remedies, the following appeals may be filed:

• Appeal for reversal (recurso de reposición) before the Rector, within one month from the day following its publication, in accordance with Law 39/2015, of October 1, on the Common Administrative Procedure.
• Contentious-administrative appeal, within two months from the day following the publication, according to Law 29/1998, of July 13, regulating the Contentious-Administrative Jurisdiction.

Access to the University Chair represents the culmination of a teaching and research trajectory and places María José Vilar García at the head of a high-profile area at the University of Murcia. The resolution, with reference NPE: A-080926-4283, consolidates the permanent faculty staff in the field of Contemporary History, reinforcing the research and training capacity of the department within the regional university system.
