The SIC increases industrial property fees by 6.96% for 2027

The Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (SIC) updated industrial property fees by 6.96% for the 2027 term, through Resolution 75972 of 2026, published in the Official Gazette No. 53,637 on Thursday, September 24, 2026. The adjustment covers patents, utility models, trademarks, commercial slogans, industrial designs, appellations of origin, and layout-designs of integrated circuits, and comes into effect on January 1, 2027.

The legal framework of the adjustment

The measure modifies Chapter One of Title X of the SIC Single Circular and is based on Article 119 of Law 6 of 1992, which limits the annual adjustment of fees to the percentage variation of the consumer price index for middle-income levels certified by Dane. It also invokes Articles 273 and 277 of Decision 486 of 2000 of the Andean Community Commission, numeral 20 of Article 22 of Decree number 4886 of 2011, modified by Decree number 092 of 2022, and Article 78 of Law 1480 of 2011.

Since the final 2026 CPI is not yet known, the SIC requested a projection from the entity’s Economic Studies Group (internal filings 26-280949 and 26-329435). That group recommended 6.96%, calculated using the ARIMAX model for the projected annual inflation of the middle-class population CPI at the close of 2026, a figure aligned with the Bank of the Republic’s forecast in its July 2026 Monetary Policy Report, which projects a total inflation of 6.9% for December 2026.

What the procedures will cost from 2027

The new rates are broken down by submission method, online and in physical format. Some examples:

Invention patent application: $126,000 online and $156,000 in physical format.
Utility model patent application: $111,500 online and $137,000 in physical format.
Industrial design registration application: $1,008,000 online and $1,208,000 in physical format.
Patentability examination of an invention patent application: $1,957,000 online and $2,345,000 in physical format.
Trademark registration renewal per class: $785,000 online and $958,500 in physical format.
Cancellation of a trademark registration for non-use in relation to a class: $2,871,500 online and $3,497,500 in physical format.

The reliefs that remain

The resolution maintains the scheme of reductions and exemptions for applicants with lower payment capacity:

25% discount for accredited micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (Mipyme) that present the certificate from the Intellectual Property Classroom (Api).
25% for those who prove specialized guidance from Cigepi or a CATI, a benefit extendable to natural persons, Mipyme, higher education institutions, and research centers.
85% for trademark and industrial design applications submitted with the certificate from the PI-e Industrial Property for Entrepreneurs program.
75% on the patentability examination for beneficiaries of the Inventors Assistance Program (PAI).
Differential rates for artisans certified by Artesanías de Colombia, beneficiaries of the traditional cuisine programs of the Ministry of Culture, youth between 18 and 28 years old, victims of the armed conflict, ethnic groups certified by the Ministry of the Interior, and participants in post-conflict programs.
Exemption from application fees, modifications, extensions, and the first patentability examination for the winners of the National Award for the Colombian Inventor.

Validity and subsequent verification

Article 2 of Resolution 75972 of 2026 provides that the regulation begins to govern on January 1, 2027, and repeals Resolution number 6167 of January 30, 2026. Once Dane certifies the definitive variation of the CPI for average incomes of 2026, the SIC will verify the increase and, if necessary, update the rates according to the applicable legal framework. The resolution was issued on September 23, 2026, and signed by the General Secretary, Paula Susana Ospina Franco.

The adjustment is issued before the definitive inflation is known and anticipates the deadlines of the Protocol Relating to the Madrid Agreement, which requires notifying the new values to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) three months in advance. For companies, Mipyme, artisans, universities, and research centers, the effect is direct: patenting, registering a trademark, or renewing one will cost 6.96% more starting next year, although the discount system remains the primary way to cushion the blow.
