La Frontera calls for 250 euro grants to study outside of El Hierro

The City Council of La Frontera, on the island of El Hierro, has announced grants of 250 euros per registered student pursuing studies outside the island during the 2026/2027 academic year. The call, approved by Mayoral-Presidential Decree on August 18, 2026, is published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife number 101, dated August 24, 2026, with reference 1747209.

The regulatory bases are contained in the specific Ordinance for the granting of student aid, initially approved in the Plenary on May 31, 2017, and published in the BOP nº 105, dated September 1, 2017, with its modification in the BOP nº 122, dated October 9, 2024. Amount and Budget

The amount of each grant is 250 euros, which may be increased based on budget availability and in accordance with the award criteria of article 10 of the call, until the funds are exhausted. The total allocated credit amounts to 70,000 euros, charged to budget items 326-48002 of the 2026 municipal budget.

Beneficiary Requirements

Students who meet the following requirements may be beneficiaries:

  • Be registered and effectively reside in the municipality of La Frontera for a minimum of one year prior to the publication of the call, and at least one of the primary supporters must reside in the municipality.
  • Be enrolled in the corresponding academic year and in the centers and programs covered by the call.
  • Not have completed studies of an equal or higher level.
  • Be under thirty years of age or have reached that age within the corresponding school year.

Eligible Programs and Deadline

The grants cover studies that cannot be carried out on the island of El Hierro, including:

  • University studies, university entrance exams, and studies carried out abroad.
  • Specialization and distance or online learning leading to degrees in Bachelor’s, Engineering, Technical Engineering, Architecture, Technical Architecture, or Master’s.
  • Intermediate and higher-level Vocational Training cycles.

Applications shall be submitted using the model in Annex II, addressed to the Mayor-President, and must be submitted through the entity’s electronic office within one month starting from the day following the publication of the call in the Official Gazette of the Province. The decree is signed by the Mayor-President, Pablo Rodríguez Cejas.

The call for applications alleviates the cost of studying off-island for families in a small municipality like La Frontera, where higher education offerings are limited. With a budget of 70,000 euros, the measure seeks to guarantee equal opportunities for students from El Hierro who must travel to continue their education.
