The Provincial Council distributes 1.3 million to restore churches in the province

The Provincial Council of Burgos has approved the first provisional resolution of the public call for grants for the restoration and conservation of churches for the 2026-2027 period, with a total expenditure of 1,300,000 euros. The agreement, signed on August 25, 2026, is published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Burgos number 168, dated September 4, 2026, with reference BOPBUR-2026-03703.

The call was announced on March 30, 2026, in the Official Gazette of the Province number 61, and the deadline for submitting applications concluded on May 1, 2026. The evaluation was carried out by the Information Commission for Culture and Education, acting as the valuation commission, which issued a favorable opinion on July 15, 2026, after unanimously ratifying the valuation minutes and the management report.

Three city councils excluded

Of the 55 applications submitted, the resolution excludes three localities for failing to comply with the terms of the call:

• Fontioso City Council, for the restoration of the church of Santa Columba, for failing to provide the required technical report (clause 4.3.1).
• Monasterio de la Sierra City Council, for the restoration of the bell tower of the church of San Pedro, as the object of the repair was not covered under the criteria of the sixth and ninth clauses.
• Las Hormazas City Council, for the repair of the church of San Millán, for having submitted another application, in accordance with clause 4.7.

Distribution and financing

The expenditure for the grants amounts to 1,300,000.00 euros, charged to budget application 16/3360/76200/11.4 of the Corporation’s 2026 budget, according to accounting document RC 12026000000302. The resolution further provides that, should any beneficiary waive their grant, the vacancy will be filled by the following applicants according to the established scoring order.

Deadline for appeals and procedure

The resolution is published in the gazette as an individualized notification, in accordance with article 45.1.b) of Law 39/2015, of October 1, on Common Administrative Procedure. Interested parties have a period of ten days to submit appeals; if none are submitted, the provisional resolution will be considered definitively approved. Otherwise, the proposal for the final resolution will be submitted to the Governing Board, which will be published in the gazette and in the National Grants Database.

The resolution, adopted by avocation of the competence delegated to the Governing Board via decree 2023007676, of July 24, 2023, and under the generic delegation granted by the Presidency via decree 2023007943, of August 3, 2023, is signed by the secretary general, José Luis M.ª González de Miguel.

The call for applications reinforces the Provincial Council’s support for the province’s religious heritage, a key sector for the conservation of rural temples and for the revitalization of the smallest municipalities. The final resolution, once the appeals have been resolved, will determine which town councils ultimately receive the grants to undertake works that, in many cases, are unaffordable with local budgets.
