The Provincial Council of Badajoz auctions 32 Merino sheep from La Cocosa in Valdecaballeros

The Provincial Council of Badajoz will sell 30 female sheep and 2 males of the white merino breed from the La Cocosa estate at the livestock auction of the San Miguel Fair in Valdecaballeros, to be held on September 29, 2026. The Official Gazette of the Province of Badajoz publishes this Friday, September 18, in issue number 179, Announcement 3613/2026, which contains the approval decree of the file and the specifications for the sale. The operation is being processed by the Functional Area of Rural Development, Demographic Challenge, and Tourism of the provincial institution.

The origin of the file and the legal framework

The file begins with the report from the manager of La Cocosa dated September 3, 2026, which confirms the availability of surplus livestock and the convenience of participating in the event. On that same day, the proposal report from the acting director of the area, Isidro Lázaro Santos, was issued, and on September 4, the initiation of the file was ordered. Favorable reports from the General Secretariat and the Comptroller’s Office were received on September 4 and September 10, respectively.

The decree is signed by Carmen Yáñez Quirós, Second Vice President and Delegated Deputy of the Functional Area of Sustainable Economy, Strategic Procurement, and Heritage, by delegation approved in the decree published in BOP number 206, supplement I, of October 29, 2025. The sale is supported by Law 33/2003, of November 3, on the Heritage of Public Administrations, and by Royal Decree 1373/2009, of August 28, which approves its General Regulation.

The La Cocosa estate, owned by the Provincial Council, is used for the maintenance of indigenous livestock and the genetic improvement of the merino sheep and lampiño pig herds of the province.

The lots and starting prices

The livestock is divided into five lots, all with ARR/ARR genotype:

• Lot 1: 10 females.
• Lot 2: 10 females.
• Lot 3: 10 females.
• Lot 4: 1 male.
• Lot 5: 1 male.

The starting price is 1,500.00 euros for each lot of 10 females, which is equivalent to 150.00 euros per animal, and 300.00 euros for each of the males. The individual list of animals, with their electronic identification, is included in Annex I of the specifications.

How to bid and who decides

The auction will be held in Valdecaballeros on September 29, 2026, coinciding with the San Miguel Livestock Fair, at the fairgrounds or at the location indicated by the City Council of Valdecaballeros, the organizer of the event. The system will be “open bidding,” with offers equal to or higher than the starting price and minimum increments of 10.00 euros; bids below the base price will not be accepted.

The auction board will consist of:

• President: the Mayor-President of the Valdecaballeros City Council or the person to whom they delegate.
• Secretary: the director of the Functional Area of Rural Development, Demographic Challenge and Tourism of the Provincial Council or the person to whom they delegate.
• Member: the manager of La Cocosa or a technician to whom they delegate.
• Veterinary Advisor: Rafael Vázquez Caldito.

Natural or legal persons with the capacity to act according to the Civil Code may bid; they must prove their identity and present Annex II (bidder data), Annex III (responsible declaration), and Annex IV (data protection). No provisional guarantee is required, in accordance with article 106.1 of the LCSP.

Payment, VAT and removal of livestock

The disposal is subject to and not exempt from VAT, therefore the successful bidders will pay the hammer price plus 10% as VAT. Payment may be made by bank card via the POS terminal provided by the Provincial Council or by transfer to account ES03 3009 0001 2025 4550 4629 at Caja Rural de Extremadura.

If payment is made by card at the fairgrounds, the livestock may be removed from there; if made by transfer, the animals shall be collected at the La Cocosa estate, on the EX-310 Badajoz-Valverde de Leganés road, kilometer 14.500, with transport costs borne by the buyer.

The auction is of direct interest to the livestock sector of the region, which gains access to white merino specimens with the ARR/ARR genotype —resistant to scrapie— at appraised starting prices per animal, and allows the Provincial Council to dispose of surplus livestock from an estate dedicated to the genetic improvement of provincial sheep.
