The Minister of Education and Vocational Training of the Junta de Extremadura, Sandra Victoria Valencia Ramos, has dismissed and appointed council members from the sector of personalities of recognized prestige in the field of education and/or culture of the School Council of Extremadura, at the proposal of the parliamentary groups of the Assembly of Extremadura. The change is published in the Official Gazette of Extremadura (DOE) number 157, of 14 August 2026, by means of the Resolution of 5 August 2026 (official reference 2026062139), which takes effect from the same day of its publication.
The School Council of Extremadura is the advisory body for the participation of the educational community in the planning and evaluation of education in the region. Its composition is governed by Law 8/2001, of 14 June, regulating the School Councils of Extremadura: section 1 of its Article 10, in relation to letter k) of section 2 of Article 12, added by the first final provision of Law 4/2011, of 7 March, on Education of Extremadura, assigns to the holder of the competent department the appointment of these council members, at the proposal of the parliamentary groups. Article 11 of the same law sets out the causes of loss of council member status, and section 4 of Article 10 provides that whoever fills a vacancy is appointed for the time remaining in the term of office of the person who caused it.
Dismissals and appointments
The resolution orders the dismissal of three council members from the sector of personalities of recognized prestige in education and culture proposed by the parliamentary groups:
- Belén Llera Méndez
- Luciano Fernández Gómez
- Juan José García García
In place of the foregoing, it appoints:
- Belén Llera Méndez
- Luciano Fernández Gómez
- Álvaro Sánchez-Ocaña Vara
In this way, Álvaro Sánchez-Ocaña Vara joins as a new personality of recognized prestige replacing Juan José García García, while Belén Llera Méndez and Luciano Fernández Gómez remain on the body after being proposed again by their parliamentary groups. Those appointed will take office before the President of the Council.
Regulatory framework
The dismissals and appointments are formalized in exercise of the powers conferred on the Minister by section 4 of Article 92 and letter k) of Article 36 of Law 1/2002, of 28 February, on the Government and Administration of the Autonomous Community of Extremadura, as well as by section 2 of Article 21 of the Order of 26 November 2003, approving the Internal Rules of Procedure of the School Council of Extremadura. The resolution thus completes the renewal procedure for the sector of personalities of recognized prestige, whose designation corresponds to the Department of Education and Vocational Training.
Entry into force
The resolution, signed in Mérida on 5 August 2026, takes effect from the very day of its publication in the Official Gazette of Extremadura, that is, from 14 August 2026, so the new composition of the sector becomes operational immediately.
The renewal updates the representation of the parliamentary groups of the Assembly of Extremadura in the regional educational advisory body and ensures the continuity of voices with recognised prestige in education and culture. The School Council of Extremadura thus keeps fully operational its advisory and participatory role in the educational planning of the autonomous community.
