The La Carlota de Boñar quarry, the environmental impact assessment

The Regional Ministry of Environment and Energy of the Regional Government of Castilla y León, through the Territorial Service of Industry, Commerce and Economy of León, has opened for public consultation the exploitation project, the environmental impact study, and the restoration plan for the exploitation authorization for resources of section A) named «La Carlota» no. 789, in the municipality of Boñar (León). The announcement is published in the Official Gazette of Castilla y León number 165, dated August 26, 2026, and opens a period of 30 business days for the submission of allegations.

The project, promoted by the commercial entity Calizas Inmibo, S.L., aims for the extraction and commercialization of limestone and dolomitic materials, the well-known Boñar Stone, through open-pit mining. The materials are primarily intended for construction, civil works, infrastructure, ornamental stone, and riprap.

Regulatory Framework and Procedure

The processing is carried out in compliance with Article 36 of Law 21/2013, of December 9, on environmental assessment, as well as Article 6 of Royal Decree 975/2009, of June 12, on the management of waste from extractive industries and the protection and rehabilitation of the natural space affected by mining activities.

The project is subject to the ordinary environmental impact assessment procedure as it is included in the cases of Annex I of Law 21/2013. The Territorial Service of Industry, Commerce and Economy of the Territorial Delegation of the Regional Government of Castilla y León in León acts as the competent body for the authorization of the project.

Under the terms of Article 83.2 of Law 39/2015, of October 1, on the Common Administrative Procedure of Public Administrations, the file may be examined during the period of 30 business days, starting from the day following the publication of the announcement in the gazette:

Impact and Scope of the Project

The exploitation affects plots no. 87, 88, 89, 90, and 91 of Polygon 110 of the municipality of Boñar, in the province of León. The announcement, signed on August 21, 2026, by the head of the Territorial Service, Fernando Bandera González, will be available from the date of publication in the B.O.C. y L.

The opening of this public information process represents a significant step for a mining project in a natural environment of the Leonese mountains, as it allows residents, city councils, and interested entities to submit allegations and observations before the administration rules on the authorization. The outcome will condition both local extractive activity and the protection of the affected area, in a balance between the exploitation of the Piedra de Boñar and the preservation of the natural environment.
