Por FactBox Admin

The Federal Public Service Economy, SMEs, Middle Classes and Energy announces that the consumer price index stood at 104.42 points in September 2026, compared to 104.01 points in August 2026, representing an increase of 0.41 point or 0.39%. The health index reached 103.76 points and the smoothed health index 101.20 points for the same month. These data are published in the Belgian Official Gazette of September 30, 2026, under reference C − 2026/090309, page 52482.
The notice comes from the federal administration of Economy, which publishes the results of the consumer price index every month. The indices are expressed on a base of 2025 = 100. The health index is that defined by the law of April 23, 2015, published in the Belgian Official Gazette of April 27, 2015; the same law governs the smoothed health index, whose monthly value is also communicated.
The previous month, the price index stood at 104.01 points compared to 103.60 points in July 2026, an increase of 0.41 point or 0.40%. The health index was then 103.49 points and the smoothed health index 100.94 points. September therefore continues an upward trajectory that began at the end of summer.
An increase of 0.39% in one month
The increase in September is 0.41 point compared to August, which corresponds to a monthly rate of 0.39%. The movement is of the same magnitude as that recorded between July and August, where the increase reached 0.40%.
The health index, which excludes certain products and follows its own methodology, rose from 103.49 to 103.76 points. The smoothed health index, a smoothed version intended for indexation mechanisms, rose from 100.94 to 101.20 points.
Energy, fuels, and services leading the movements
The detailed table published with the notice, established on a base of 2025 = 100, identifies the most dynamic items in September 2026:
- Electricity, gas, and other fuels: 115.88 points, including gas 126.72, electricity 110.73, and liquid fuels 118.07.
- Fuels and lubricants for personal vehicles: 131.91 points.
- Non-food products: 106.02 points.
- Services: 105.69 points.
- Rents: 103.10 points.
- Food products and non-alcoholic beverages: 99.63 points, down from August.
- Air passenger transport: 99.74 points.
The health index, reference for indexation
The health index and its smoothed version constitute the basis for many indexation mechanisms provided for by collective agreements and federal regulations. Several collective labor agreements published in the Belgian Official Gazette thus link salaries and bonuses to the evolution of the smoothed health index, notably in the joint committee for the food industry, in application of the agreement of July 20, 2011, registered under number 106104/CO/118 and the royal decree of January 21, 2013.
The same index serves as a reference for regulatory amounts. Circular No. 771 of September 16, 2026, published under reference C − 2026/006808, thus sets the mileage allowance at 0.4452 euros for the period from October 1 to December 31, 2026, replacing the price index with the smoothed health index in the calculation.
What this changes for readers
The publication of the September 2026 index provides the reference parameter used for the indexation of salaries, rents, and various allowances. Employers, landlords, and administrations thus have the official figure applicable to the past month, with the smoothed health index at 101.20 points constituting the determining value for the mechanisms linked to it.
