The Minister of Culture and Language Policy of the Basque Government Ibone Bengoetxea Otaolea —who is also the First Vice President of the Government— resolves the 2026 grants for Basque-language and local newspapers, radio, and digital television through the Order of October 28, 2026. A total of 6,958,217.73 euros has been distributed among 38 approved entities, and eight requests were denied. The resolution was published in the Official Gazette of the Basque Country (BOPV), issue number 213, on November 6, 2026, with official reference 2026/4699.

These grants are the result of the call approved by the Order of July 29, 2026; that order was published in the BOPV on August 7, 2026. The objective of the call is to support responsible journalism, combat disinformation, and promote advanced skills in digital literacy, and the procedure established in Article 12 of the call was applied: the managing body had the report of the Evaluation Committee, which made the proposal to the minister. The distribution is made in three main lines: line 1 includes grants for accredited professional newspapers, and line 2 includes grants for local and digital projects, divided into two sub-categories.

Newspaper lines total 5.96 million euros

In line 1, there are 15 beneficiary media outlets, which will receive a total of 5,961,646.47 euros. The largest amounts are as follows:

Thus, the entirety of line 2 totals 996,571.26 euros.

Eight requests denied

In the second point of the resolution, eight requests are denied, as they do not meet the requirements to be beneficiaries. In all cases, the file number and the applied article are specified:

  • Radio 7, S.L. — 006-KM1-2026, article 20.1.
  • Herritar Berri, S.L. — 007-KM2-2026, article 24.1.

  • Codesyntax, S.L. — 011-KM3-2026, article 4.5.
  • Arrate Irratia, S.L. — 013-KM3-2026, article 4.1 d).
  • Barrena Komunikazioa Koop, S.L. — 014-KM3-2026, article 4.1 d).

Appeals and impact

The order exhausts the administrative route. Interested entities may file an appeal for reversal before the Minister of Culture and Language Policy within one month, or a contentious-administrative appeal within two months, in both cases starting from the day after the notification. The resolution does not mention the possibility of reviewing the published amounts, but the appeals process remains open.

These grants stabilize the financing structure of local media, especially in the case of small projects working in Basque: ten beneficiaries received less than 60,000 euros, and this amount is essential for the continuity of small newsrooms. This year’s total amount is 6,958,217.73 euros, and the distribution is made among three lines, highlighting the gap between the major newspapers and local projects: one line gathers nearly six million, and local radio and digital projects around one million.
