King Frederik X resumes government after foreign trip, gazette confirms

King Frederik X resumed the conduct of government on 1 November 2026 after returning from a trip abroad, according to a royal proclamation published in Statstidende on 3 November 2026. The resumption closes a regency opened by an open letter dated 30 October 2026, in which the King handed government business to Crown Prince Christian and, during the Crown Prince’s own absence, to Queen Mary. Both texts sit under the heading “Meddelelser vedrørende Kongehuset” in the gazette’s “Diverse” section, under official reference S03112026-109.

The arrangement rests on a nineteenth-century statute still in force: § 1 of lov nr. 25 af 11. februar 1871 om regeringens førelse i tilfælde af Kongens umyndighed, sygdom eller fraværelse, which governs how the kingdom is run when the monarch is under age, ill or away. The two documents carry the formula “Under Vor Kongelige Hånd og Segl”, are signed FREDERIK R. and are countersigned by Mette Frederiksen, the Prime Minister, whose name appears beneath the royal signature in both cases. No duration, destination or programme for the trip is stated in the gazette; the open letter fixes the mandate simply as running from the day of signature “indtil Vor hjemkomst” — until the King’s homecoming.

Open letter of 30 October named two regents

The Åbent Brev given in Copenhagen on 30 October 2026 announced that the King would be travelling abroad and designated the regents who would act in his name while he was away. Its provisions were:

  • Crown Prince Christian was appointed to act as rigsforstander, exercising the government in the King’s name.
  • Queen Mary was appointed to the same role during any simultaneous absence of the Crown Prince from the Realm.
  • The mandate took effect from the date of signature, 30 October 2026, and was to last until the King’s return.
  • The letter was countersigned by Mette Frederiksen and issued under the royal hand and seal.

The wording follows the standard template for such letters, invoking the 1871 statute expressly and describing the transfer as provisional and temporary.

Proclamation of 1 November closed the regency

The second half of the published notice is a Kundgørelse om Kongens hjemkomst og overtagelse af regeringens førelse, dated Copenhagen, 1 November 2026. In it the King states that, having returned from his journey, he “i dag har overtaget regeringens førelse” — that same day took over the conduct of government — and expressly refers back to the open letter of 30 October 2026 as the instrument that had delegated it. The proclamation also records the sequence of substitution: the Crown Prince first, and the Queen where the Crown Prince was himself absent from the Realm. Like the open letter, it is signed FREDERIK R. and countersigned by the Prime Minister.

Second handover in under two weeks

The notice published on 3 November is the second such pair to appear within a fortnight. Statstidende of 27 October 2026 carried an open letter dated 22 October 2026, delegating government business to the Crown Prince and the Queen, together with a proclamation dated 24 October 2026 in which the King announced his return and resumption of government. Read together, the two publications record a short trip in late October, a return, and then a second departure on 30 October followed by the resumption announced for 1 November.

For readers, the practical effect is straightforward: from 1 November 2026 royal assent, appointments and other acts of government are again exercised by the King in person rather than by a regent, and the regency recorded in the open letter of 30 October has lapsed. The gazette notice is the formal public proof that the transfer of authority happened and, equally, that it has ended.
