Juana Brito Alonso takes office as the titular justice of the peace of Betancuria
Por FactBox Admin

Juana Brito Alonso is the new titular justice of the peace for the municipality of Betancuria, in Fuerteventura. The Governing Chamber of the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands adopted her appointment in an agreement dated October 23, 2026, which the Official Gazette of the Province of Las Palmas publishes in issue number 131, corresponding to Monday, November 2, 2026, with registration number 2210937 and internal folio 2,210,937.
The agreement appears in section IV, Administration of Justice, of the provincial gazette, on page 18932, within the section dedicated to the Presidency of the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands. The text is based on the prior certification of the agreement by the Governing Chamber and is limited to formalizing the appointment agreed upon by that governing body of the Canarian judiciary, without the publication including any further motivation other than the reference to said certification.
With this procedure, the position of titular justice of the peace for the municipality of Fuerteventura is filled in writing and with official record in the provincial gazette, which is the channel for publicizing these appointments within the scope of the Administration of Justice.
The content of the Governing Chamber’s agreement
The agreement, signed in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on October 23, 2026, by the president of the Canarian high court, states verbatim that «MS. JUANA BRITO ALONSO be appointed Titular Justice of the Peace of the municipality of BETANCURIA (Fuerteventura)». Based on that certification, the document orders a series of administrative actions aimed at making the designation effective:
- The creation of the personal file for the new head of the justice of the peace court.
- The sending of «the appropriate communications» for the assumption of office for which she has been appointed.
- The incorporation of the record of assumption of office into the aforementioned file, once received, «for its purposes».
The text closes with the usual formula for these agreements, «Thus I agree and sign», and the signature of the president of the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands, without detailing the merits of the appointee or the prior selection process in the publication.
Betancuria completes its justice of the peace court
The appointment of the titular justice is added to that of the substitute justice of the peace for the same municipality, also resolved by the Governing Chamber on the same date and published days earlier in the provincial gazette:
- Juana Brito Alonso, titular justice of the peace of Betancuria, by agreement of October 23, 2026 (registration number 2210937).
- Elena de la Peña Brito, substitute justice of the peace of Betancuria, by agreement of the same date published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Las Palmas number 130, of October 30, 2026 (registration number 2,191,113, folio 2,191,113).
Both publications share the date of the agreement and the same decision-making body, such that the justice of the peace court of Betancuria is covered both in terms of ownership and substitution, a relevant circumstance in a small-population municipality where the continuity of the service depends on very few designated people.
A municipality with constant administrative activity
Betancuria has had a continuous presence in the provincial bulletin during the last quarter. In the same period, the City Council has published the final approval of its General Ordinance regulating subsidies, the Regulatory Regulation for Teleworking within the corporation, and various delegations from the Mayor’s Office for the celebration of civil marriages, in addition to the census edict for the Tax on Economic Activities for 2026. These are municipal procedures that now add to the coverage of the local judicial position.
The justice of the peace court is the judicial instance closest to the citizen within the municipal sphere, with competencies in minor matters and civil registry functions, so its stable coverage avoids travel to other judicial headquarters on the island. The publication of the appointment in the official bulletin provides legal certainty to the designation and opens the period for the new holder to formalize the taking of office and for the minutes to be incorporated into their file. Until then, the agreement of the Governing Chamber of October 23 remains as the documentary support for the change in the ownership of the court.
