Josep Canadell wins the 2026 Margalef Ecology Prize

The Department of the Presidency of the Generalitat de Catalunya has announced the awarding of the twenty-second edition of the Ramon Margalef Ecology Prize, corresponding to the year 2026, to the scientist Josep Canadell Gili. The decision is recorded in Resolution PRE/3057/2026, of July 29, published in the Official Gazette of the Generalitat de Catalunya (DOGC) no. 9738, of August 26, 2026, with the official reference CVE-DOGC-A-26237031-2026.
The award recognizes Canadell’s outstanding contributions to demonstrating the feedback between ecosystems and the global climate, as well as his exemplary and long-term leadership in the synthesis of global change by the international scientific community. The jury’s verdict was adopted unanimously in the session held on May 29, 2026.
An international reference award
The Ramon Margalef Ecology Prize is one of the most prestigious recognitions in this discipline and distinguishes individuals or entities with an outstanding scientific trajectory. The call for the twenty-second edition was approved by means of Resolution PRE/123/2026, of January 20, published in DOGC no. 9590, of January 26, 2026.
The regulatory framework of the prize is based on the following regulations:
- Decree 101/2012, of September 25 (DOGC no. 6221, of 27.09.2012), which modifies the regulation of the prize.
- Decree 160/2010, of November 9 (DOGC no. 5755, of 15.11.2010), regulating the Ramon Margalef Ecology Prize.
The laureate’s trajectory
Josep Canadell Gili is an internationally recognized scientist in the field of ecology and global change. The jury particularly valued his ability to demonstrate how ecosystems and the global climate mutually influence each other, a key research field for understanding and mitigating the effects of climate change.
The resolution also highlights his role as a promoter of scientific synthesis on global change, a task he has carried out continuously and which has contributed to guiding environmental and climate policies on an international scale.
Publication and effects
The resolution, signed by the Secretary General of the Department of the Presidency, Eva Giménez Corrons, orders the publication of the recognition in the DOGC and on the Transparency Portal of the Generalitat de Catalunya. The award is granted in accordance with the provisions of regulatory basis 8 of the call.
With this distinction, Catalonia reaffirms its commitment to scientific research of excellence in ecology, a field of growing relevance for citizens in the face of the challenges of climate change and the need to preserve ecosystems.
