Por FactBox Admin

Jean-Raynald de Dreuzy has been appointed president of the École normale supérieure de Rennes by a decree signed on 19 August 2026. The decision, taken by the French government, takes effect from the start of the 2026 academic year and was published in the Journal officiel de la République française of 20 August 2026.

The appointment is made by decree under the authority of the Ministère de l’enseignement supérieur, de la recherche et de l’espace, which is responsible, together with the Premier ministre, for the application of the text. The decree carries the official reference NOR ESRS2614953D and appears in JORF n°0193 of 20 August 2026.

A leading higher-education institution

The École normale supérieure de Rennes is one of France’s elite higher-education establishments, training future researchers and teachers through selective, research-intensive programmes. As president, M. de Dreuzy will lead the institution’s academic and administrative direction, a role central to its standing among the French grandes écoles.

The decree is a standard instrument of the French executive for senior appointments in the public higher-education sector. It follows the established procedure whereby the head of the institution is named by government decree and the text is countersigned by the responsible ministers.

Scope of the appointment

The decree comprises two articles:

  • Article 1 appoints M. Jean-Raynald de Dreuzy as president of the École normale supérieure de Rennes.
  • Article 2 makes the Premier ministre and the ministre de l’enseignement supérieur, de la recherche et de l’espace responsible, each in their own remit, for the application of the decree.

The text does not specify a fixed term of office, leaving the duration of the mandate to the general rules governing such appointments in the higher-education sector.

Impact of the change

The nomination places a new head at the helm of a key institution in the French research and training landscape at the start of the academic year. For students, staff and the wider academic community, the appointment signals continuity in the governance of the École normale supérieure de Rennes under the authority of the higher-education ministry.
