IMSS hace obligatoria la Tarjeta de Identificación Patronal Digital

The Honorable Technical Council of the Mexican Social Security Institute approved the mandatory generation of the Digital Employer Identification Card (TIP), which will be obtained through the IMSS Mailbox (Buzón IMSS) and will replace the card issued in physical format. The decision was formalized in Agreement ACDO.AS2.HCT.310826/238.P.DIR, published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on September 8, 2026, and will enter into force 15 calendar days after its publication.

The agreement was issued during the ordinary session of the Technical Council held on August 31, 2026, based on the proposal presented by the Director General through the head of the Directorate of Incorporation and Collection, via official letter number 219 dated August 19, 2026, and the ruling of the Incorporation and Collection Committee issued in an ordinary meeting on August 20 of the same year.

The measure affects all employers and obligated parties in the country, who must generate their TIP digitally. The agreement is based on articles 15, fraction I, 251, fractions IV, XIII and XXXVIII, 263, 264, fractions III and XVII and 286 M of the Social Security Law; the Federal Law of Parastatal Entities; the Internal Regulations of the Mexican Social Security Institute; and the Regulations of the Social Security Law regarding Affiliation, Company Classification, Collection and Auditing.

Additionally, the Council approved the update of the list of procedures and services available and to be offered in the IMSS Mailbox, which had been established by Agreement ACDO.AS2.HCT.230724/261.P.DIR, published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on August 5, 2024, to add the new digital TIP generation service.

How to generate the card

The procedure for obtaining the digital TIP, contained in Annex I of the agreement, is carried out entirely online through the IMSS Mailbox:

  • Access the IMSS Mailbox via the Institute’s website (www.imss.gob.mx/buzonimss) using the corresponding authentication method.
  • In the main menu, under the “Affiliation and Collection” section, select the “My TIP” option.
  • Type and select the Employer Registration (Registro Patronal) for which the TIP generation is desired.
  • Verify that the list of authorized persons is correct (maximum 3), who may be added or removed using the CURP.
  • Click on “Generate TIP”, review the information, and accept the generation, which is downloaded in PDF format to be saved or printed.
  • For reprints, click on “Download PDF” as many times as required.

Implementation and Validity

The agreement instructs the heads of the Social Security Incorporation Unit and the Strategic Services Unit to resolve doubts and clarifications from the Institute’s administrative units, and the head of the Innovation and Technological Development Directorate to make the necessary adjustments to implement the measure. The Legal Directorate was tasked with processing the publication of the agreement and its annexes in the Official Gazette of the Federation.

The document was signed by the Secretary General, Dr. Jorge Gaviño Ambriz, and the Director of Incorporation and Collection, Luisa Alejandra Guadalupe Obrador Garrido Cuesta, in Mexico City, on August 31, 2026.

With this provision, the IMSS advances in the digitalization of its employer procedures, eliminating the physical issuance of the card and centralizing its procurement in the IMSS Mailbox. Employers and obligated parties must adapt their processes to comply with the new obligation within the following 15 calendar days after publication, which implies a relevant operational change for the management of affiliation and collection throughout the country.
