Iberdrola somete a información pública la batería BAT CHÍO en Tenerife

The General Directorate of Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands has opened for public consultation the request for administrative authorization of the BAT CHÍO battery energy storage system and its evacuation infrastructure, promoted by Iberdrola Renovables Canarias, S.A.U. in the municipality of Guía de Isora (Tenerife). The announcement, dated June 19, 2026, is published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands no. 211, of October 22, 2026, under file GE25/041 and with a budget of 35,776,199.48 euros.

The procedure is based on Decree 141/2009, of November 10, which regulates the administrative procedures for the execution and commissioning of electrical installations in the Canary Islands; Royal Decree 1955/2000, of December 1, regarding the authorization of electrical energy installations; and Law 39/2015, of October 1, on the Common Administrative Procedure. The Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy acts as the competent body through its General Directorate of Energy.

The request for authorization was submitted on December 11, 2025, to the same department. The announcement is signed, by delegation, by the Head of the Technical Energy Area, Alberto Miguel Blasco Lorenzo, in application of Resolution no. 462/2026, of March 20, 2026.

A storage system of 168.7 MWh and 39.51 MW

The project consists of an energy storage system using batteries in a stand-alone configuration, meaning it is not associated with a generation plant. Its main parameters are as follows:

  • Total capacity: 168.688 MWh.
  • Installed power in converters: 39.51 MW.
  • Autonomy: 4 hours.
  • Location: municipality of Guía de Isora, on the island of Tenerife.

The technical document of the system was drafted by Luis Trijueque Alosete, of the Official College of Industrial Engineers of Madrid (membership no. 8410), dated December 3, 2025.

Own substation and line to the SE Guía de Isora

The installation includes the necessary infrastructure to evacuate the stored energy. The planned route is as follows:

  • An underground 30 kV line connecting the plant with the future ST Promotores Guía 30/66 kV substation, designed by David Almonacid Arnero (Official College of Industrial Engineers of Valencia, membership no. 4211, of December 23, 2025).
  • The voltage increase to 66 kV at that substation.
  • The high-voltage underground line LSAT Promotores Guía 66 kV, signed by María Isabel López Ferrer (Official College of Industrial Engineers of Madrid, membership no. 17566, of December 5, 2025), which links to the SE Guía de Isora 66 kV.

The project is subject to a simplified environmental impact assessment, as stated in the announcement itself.

Thirty days to submit allegations

Any natural or legal person has a period of thirty days, starting from the day following the publication of the announcement, to examine the project and submit any allegations they deem appropriate. The consultation can be carried out in two ways:

  • In person at the office of the Ministry in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Edificio Administrativo de Usos Múltiples I, Avenida Francisco La Roche, no. 35, 7th floor, by prior appointment requested via email at stgro.energia@gobiernodecanarias.org.
  • Through the web link enabled in the announcement itself for the download of the documentation.

The calculation of the period therefore begins on October 23, 2026.

The processing directly affects the Canarian energy sector, where storage has become the piece that must provide stability to an insular system with strong renewable penetration, as well as the residents and environmental groups of Guía de Isora, who now have one month to comment on a project of 35.77 million euros and nearly 170 MWh of capacity in their municipality.
