Hungary relieves ambassador Demcsák Csaba of Zagreb post

Dr. Demcsák Csaba, extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador, has been relieved of his mandate to head Hungary’s embassy in Zagreb, with recognition of his merits. The decision was taken by President Dr. Sulyok Tamás on the proposal of the foreign minister and published in the Magyar Közlöny of 19 August 2026.
The relief is formalised in Decision 197/2026. (VIII. 19.) KE of the President of the Republic, published in issue 115 of the official gazette on page 4017.
Legal basis and issuing body
The decision rests on Article 9(4)(b) of the Fundamental Law of Hungary, which entrusts the President of the Republic with the appointment and relief of ambassadors and heads of diplomatic missions. The act was countersigned by Foreign Minister Dr. Orbán Anita, as required for presidential acts in the field of foreign affairs.
The document was signed in Budapest on 16 July 2026 and countersigned on 22 July 2026, under administrative reference SP/2158-54/2026.
The outgoing ambassador
Dr. Demcsák Csaba held the rank of extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador and led the Hungarian embassy in the Croatian capital. The wording of the decision stresses that the relief is granted “in recognition of his merits,” indicating a routine rotation of the head of mission rather than a disciplinary measure.

Publication and entry into force

Relevance
The change of head of mission in Zagreb is part of the regular renewal of Hungary’s diplomatic representation abroad. As Croatia is a neighbouring EU member state and a key partner in regional and energy cooperation, the appointment of a new ambassador to Zagreb will be followed closely in Budapest’s foreign policy circles.
