Hernández Mosquera, new chief general of the Civil Guard in the Balearic Islands

The Ministry of the Interior has appointed Brigadier General Alejandro Hernández Mosquera to the Command of the 17th Zone of the Civil Guard, Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands (Palma de Mallorca). The decision is formalized through Order INT/997/2026, dated September 17, signed by Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska Gómez, and published in the Official State Gazette on Friday, September 25, 2026 (reference BOE-A-2026-19854). The handover places a general at the head of the armed institute in the archipelago.

The order is issued in accordance with Article 14.1 of Organic Law 2/1986, of March 13, on Security Forces and Corps, and by virtue of the powers conferred by Article 79 of Law 29/2014, of November 28, on the Personnel Regime of the Civil Guard. The appointment is agreed upon at the proposal of the Director General of the Civil Guard and with the approval of the Secretary of State for Security.

A recent promotion in the armed institute

The appointment comes nearly four months after Hernández Mosquera was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General of the Civil Guard Corps. That promotion was formalized by Royal Decree 443/2026, of May 27, published in the BOE no. 131, of May 29, 2026 (reference BOE-A-2026-11591), at the proposal of the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles Fernández, and following deliberation by the Council of Ministers in its meeting on May 26, 2026.

Until then, he held the rank of colonel, with which he had already been stationed in the archipelago.

Previous trajectory in the Balearic Islands

The new zone chief is not unfamiliar with the assignment he now assumes as a general. Official documents place him at the head of the Zone/Command of the Balearic Islands in previous years:

What the command of the 17th Zone entails

The 17th Zone of the Civil Guard is the territorial structure of the armed institute whose command corresponds to the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands, headquartered in Palma de Mallorca, as specified by the order itself. Its leadership groups the deployment of the corps across the islands and constitutes the command level of the armed institute in the archipelago.

The appointment is part of a series of movements in the territorial leadership of the corps published throughout 2026, including:

• Cessation of Major General Fernando Mora Moret from the Command of the 1st Zone, Community of Madrid (Order INT/228/2026, of March 13).
• Cessation of Brigadier General Francisco Javier Vélez Alcalde from the Command of the 2nd Zone, Castilla-La Mancha (Order INT/394/2026, of April 24).
• Appointment of Brigadier General Francisco José Almansa Aguilar to the Command of the 1st Zone, Madrid (Order INT/398/2026, of April 24).
• Cessation of Brigadier General Miguel Ángel González Arias from the Command of the 15th Zone, Galicia (Order INT/574/2026, of June 3).

Closing

With this handover, the Civil Guard in the Balearic Islands remains under the command of a brigadier general with previous experience in the zone itself, which points to continuity in the leadership of the armed institute in the islands and in coordination with the regional and local administrations regarding security.
