Guyana orders compulsory acquisition of land for Heroes Highway extension
Por FactBox Admin

The Government of Guyana has moved to compulsorily acquire private land for the extension of the road from Heroes Highway to the Ogle/Timehri Highway. The acquisition is made by Order No. 182 of 2026, formally titled The Acquisition of Lands for Public Purposes (Road Extension Heroes Highway to Ogle/Timehri Highway) Order, 2026, and is published in The Official Gazette of Guyana No. 389/2026 of Saturday 10 October 2026, in Legal Supplement B at page 947.
The order sits in the subsidiary legislation part of the Legal Supplement, the section of the gazette reserved for statutory instruments made under existing laws. On the same day, Legal Supplement A (Acts) and Legal Supplement C (Bills) were both recorded as nil, leaving Order No. 182 of 2026 as the lead item of new subsidiary legislation in the issue.
The gazette is published by the Authority of the Government and printed and published by Guyana National Printers Limited, 1 Public Road, La Penitence, Greater Georgetown. It is issued every Saturday and on such extraordinary days as the Government may direct.
What the order provides
- Title: The Acquisition of Lands for Public Purposes (Road Extension Heroes Highway to Ogle/Timehri Highway) Order, 2026.
- Number: Order No. 182 of 2026.
- Publication: The Official Gazette of Guyana No. 389/2026, Saturday 10 October 2026.
- Placement: Legal Supplement B (Subsidiary Legislation), page 947.
The title places the instrument within the Acquisition of Lands for Public Purposes framework, the statutory route by which the State takes private land for public works and which the gazette cites as the Acquisition of Lands for Public Purposes Act, Chapter 62:05. The stated purpose is a road extension running from Heroes Highway to the Ogle/Timehri Highway.
The route and the landowners affected
The order names two fixed points: Heroes Highway at one end and the Ogle/Timehri Highway at the other. Land falling within the corridor between those two points is the subject of the acquisition, which places owners and occupiers of property along that alignment among the parties directly affected.
The instrument is described as an acquisition order, the form used to take the identified lands for the stated public purpose, rather than a preliminary notice of intention to acquire.
Companion orders in the same supplement
The same Legal Supplement B carried a second block of subsidiary legislation: Orders No. 183-187 of 2026, the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (Transfer of Property) Order 2026, beginning at page 949. Those five orders concern the transfer of property involving National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited, a separate matter from the road acquisition but published in the same supplement.
The rest of the issue was routine: Government Notice at page 3300, Notices from page 3304, Miscellaneous from page 3311, and a First Supplement covering Transports, Mortgages and Leases (page 3987), Companies (page 4037), Lands and Surveys (page 4043) and Trade Marks (page 4050).
For readers along the Heroes Highway to Ogle/Timehri corridor, Order No. 182 of 2026 is the formal instrument behind the road extension and the public record of the land being taken for it. Landowners on the alignment should treat the 10 October 2026 issue of The Official Gazette of Guyana as the authoritative notice of the acquisition.
