Gran Canaria chooses its hunters' representative on the Insular Council

The Insular Council of Gran Canaria has called for the election of the representative member for hunting societies on the Insular Hunting Council of Gran Canaria, which will be held next Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at 5:00 PM at the Cabildo Agricultural Farm in Arucas. The call, signed by the President of the Council, Raúl Salvador García Brink, is published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Las Palmas number 104, dated August 31, 2026, with registration 1787467 and page 15228.

The procedure falls under the jurisdiction of the insular councils regarding hunting, as attributed by article 6.2 q) of Law 3/2026, of June 16, on Insular Councils. According to article 37 of Law 7/1998, of July 6, on Hunting in the Canary Islands, the Insular Hunting Council is an advisory body to the council on all matters related to hunting activities.

Three candidates in the running

There are three hunting societies that have provided the required documentation and will present a candidate, each with their representative:

• La Aldea Hunting Society — José Oliver Saavedra Ramírez (D.N.I. *9635)
• Valsequillo Almogaren Hunting Society Sports Club — Pedro Miguel López Pérez (D.N.I. *9389)
• Verete Cumbres de Gran Canaria Hunting Society Sports Club — Manuel Díaz Medina (D.N.I. *4387)

The member will be elected by a simple majority of the represented group for a renewable period of four years, in accordance with article 73 of the Regulations of the Hunting Law of the Canary Islands and article 5 of the Council’s Statute, approved in the Plenary session of April 19, 2018, and published in BOP number 53, dated May 2, 2018.

Electoral Board and census

The Electoral Board will be chaired by Angelina Suárez Suárez, head of the Administrative Service of the Department of Environment, Climate, Energy, and Knowledge, and the secretaries of the three societies presenting candidacies will act as members. Additionally, each society may appoint a scrutineer, chosen from the members of its board of directors.

Hunters holding a hunting license in the last two seasons (2025 and 2026) may participate in the vote. The census will be certified days before the vote to ensure the most up-to-date data possible.

Process calendar

The procedure began by resolution of the Council President on May 5, 2026, and the call announcement was published in the BOP of Las Palmas on May 11, 2026, with a deadline of fifteen calendar days to submit applications, which ended on May 26, 2026. The current call, dated August 25, 2026, is signed by the president Raúl Salvador García Brink (Decree number 67/2023) and the secretary of the Council, Angelina Suárez Suárez (Decree number CGC/2026/5475).

The election of the representative for the hunting societies is key for the representation of the island’s hunting sector, as the Insular Hunting Council is the advisory body to the Cabildo in the management of hunting activities, and its composition influences the decisions affecting hunters and private hunting reserves in Gran Canaria for the next four years.
