Governor appoints three new justices of the peace in Western Australia

The Governor in Executive Council has approved the appointment of three new justices of the peace for the State of Western Australia, according to a notice published in the Government Gazette of 9 October 2026. The appointments are made under the Justices of the Peace Act 2004 and are notified for public information in notice JU401, signed by Joanne Stampalia, Deputy Director General, Court and Tribunal Services. The notice appears in the Justice section of the gazette, at page 2275.

The three appointees

The gazette records that the Governor in Executive Council has approved of the following to the Office of Justice of the Peace for the State of Western Australia:

  • Peter James Doody of Abbey
  • Megan Jane Irving of Menzies
  • Andrew Robert Zint of Kalgoorlie

The notice lists each appointee by full name and place of residence, with no further conditions or terms recorded in the gazette entry.

How the appointments are notified

The entry is published under the heading “Appointments” in the Justice division of the gazette, immediately after the fisheries notices and before the local government section. It is one of a series of such notices issued through the same channel in recent weeks, each carrying the same formula: the Governor in Executive Council approves the appointment, and the Court and Tribunal Services executive signs the notification.

Recent notices published in the same series include:

  • Claire Louise Sly of Nannup, notified on 2 October 2026
  • Kelly Jean Bradley of Kalamunda, Russell Wardlaw Jones of Stoneville, Annette Rae Messenger of Bertram and Samia Naz of Aveley, notified on 29 September 2026
  • Roxanne Rae McNab of Narrogin, notified on 15 September 2026
  • Hannah Aroha Turner of Norseman, notified on 8 September 2026
  • Ry Michael Fonseka, Annette Hilda Gelok, Annette Jane Morgan, James Vinay Kumar Rai and Suzanne Gail Worner, notified on 4 September 2026

Departures from the office

The same gazette series also records departures. Notices published in September 2026 state that the Minister accepted the resignations of several justices of the peace from the Office of Justice of the Peace for the State of Western Australia, including Robert Reginald James Fisher of Dalkeith and Doreen Fay Jones of Mandurah, notified on 15 September 2026, and John Edward Burgess of Claremont, Louis Manuel Gussman of Como, Michael Henry Venn Malloch of Northam and Maria Taufa Vaioleti-Ponga of Ridgewood, notified on 28 August 2026.

Why it matters

Justices of the peace perform statutory functions across Western Australia, including witnessing documents and exercising powers conferred on them by law, and the gazette notice is the formal public record of who holds the office. The addition of appointees resident in Menzies and Kalgoorlie, alongside one in Abbey, extends the roster of office holders available outside the metropolitan area, where access to a justice of the peace can depend on local availability.
