Fuerteventura begins the environmental assessment to reopen the Cueva del Llano

The Environmental Evaluation Body of Fuerteventura has admitted for processing the request to initiate the simplified environmental impact assessment procedure for the project to execute the works necessary for the reopening to the public of the Cueva del Llano, in Villaverde (Fuerteventura). The decision, adopted on August 25, 2026, was made public through announcement 2.911 of the Official Gazette of the Province of Las Palmas number 106, dated September 4, 2026, and opens a period of twenty business days for interested parties to submit allegations.

The project is promoted by the City Council of La Oliva, the owner of the site, and is processed under file 2026/19149. A reference natural and tourist site

The Cueva del Llano is a volcanic cavity located in the municipality of La Oliva, in the north of Fuerteventura, considered one of the main geological and tourist attractions of the island. Its reopening to the public requires the execution of adaptation and safety works, the environmental viability of which must be assessed before authorization.

The project’s Environmental Document, with an electronic signature date of August 6, 2026, is available to the public during the allegations period. The documentation can be consulted through the following channels:

The announcement was signed in Puerto del Rosario on August 31, 2026, by the deputy secretary of the Environmental Body of Fuerteventura, Cristina Arribas Castañeyra. The resolution is published with registration number 1809995 in the provincial gazette.

Relevance for the island
