Extremadura doubles artificial intelligence grants for SMEs to 4 million

The Regional Government of Extremadura (Junta de Extremadura) has doubled the allocation for the first call for grants aimed at financing the implementation of artificial intelligence tools and applications in Extremaduran SMEs, increasing from 2 to 4 million euros. The measure, motivated by the high volume of applications registered, is published in the Official Gazette of Extremadura (DOE) no. 194, dated October 7, 2026, through the modification of the call summary (official reference 2026062526).

The origin of the call lies in Decree 173/2025, of December 9, published in DOE no. 13, of January 21, 2026, which established the regulatory bases for these grants and simultaneously approved the first call. The summary was published in accordance with articles 17.3.b) and 20.8.a) of Law 38/2003, of November 17, General Law on Subsidies, and its full text can be consulted in the National Subsidies Database with the identifier 881941.

The fourth section of the original summary set a financial allocation of 2,000,000 euros charged to budget application 14007.332A.77000, project 20240550 “Boosting Artificial Intelligence in SMEs”, fund code TE32004001, financed through a transfer from the General State Administration, with a single annuity planned for 2026.

Double the credit in the face of a flood of applications

Since the opening of the call, a high volume of applications has been registered, meaning the initially planned credit of 2,000,000 euros was insufficient to meet them. The approved expansion amounts to a maximum additional sum of 2,000,000 euros, so that the total allocation for the call rises to 4,000,000 euros.

The DOE justifies the increase based on the convenience of “reinforcing the effectiveness of public action” and favoring a greater extension of its effects on the business fabric of the Autonomous Community of Extremadura, in coherence with the purpose of Decree 173/2025, aimed at promoting the implementation of artificial intelligence tools and applications.

New distribution between 2026 and 2027

The expansion is financed through budget application 140070000G/332A/77000, fund code TE32004001, and expenditure project 20240550, provided for in Law 2/2026, of August 3, on the General Budgets of the Autonomous Community of Extremadura for 2026. The temporal distribution of the expenditure is fixed as follows:

• 2026 Annuity: 2,844,808.09 euros.
• 2027 Annuity: 1,155,191.91 euros.

Financing and administrative procedure

The announcement of the credit expansion is supported by the seventh section of the call included in Decree 173/2025, of December 9, and modifies the section of the summary published in DOE no. 13, of January 21, 2026, referring to the financing and amount of the grant.

The document is signed in Mérida on September 15, 2026, by the Secretary General, Juan Andrés Moreno Martín, and its official reference is 2026062526, with the BDNS identifier 881941.

The decision significantly expands the margin of available public support for small and medium-sized enterprises in Extremadura to digitalize their processes through artificial intelligence, a field in which demand has exceeded all initial forecasts of the regional Administration. The new distribution over two annual periods also allows for the commitment of funds until 2027, providing continuity to a subsidy line that aims to transform the region’s productive fabric.
