The Basque Government has called for 190 scholarship applicants for the 2026-2027 academic year

The Department of Science, Universities and Innovation of the Basque Government has called for 190 Ikasiker collaboration grants for the 2026-2027 academic year, so that university students can work in research groups. The call was approved by an order signed by Minister Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias on September 8, and was published in BOPV no. 178, issue of September 17, 2026, with official reference 2026/3920. The grants have a total economic commitment of 330,000 euros.

Two modalities and 330,000 euros

According to the order, the grants are divided into two modalities:

• Modality A: to be carried out throughout the academic year, from January 1 to June 30, 2027; a maximum of 150 grants, 2,000 euros each. 300,000 euros are allocated for this item.
• Modality B: to be carried out during the summer period, from June 1 to September 30, 2027; a maximum of 40 grants, 750 euros each. 30,000 euros are allocated for this.

The call is part of the Department of Science, Universities and Innovation’s 2026 Strategic Grant Plan, within the Vice-Ministry of University Policy and the Directorate for Attention and Care of the University Community. The grants are of a subsidy nature and aim to promote the research work of students in the Basque university system.

For whom and in which research centers

The grants are for university students, provided they are in a compatibility regime with their studies. In Modality A, students in the last two academic years of an official Degree or Double Degree may participate; in Modality B, in addition to Degree students, official Master’s students may also participate.

• Beneficiaries must carry out the collaboration in research groups of the Basque Autonomous Community university system, BERC centers, Health Research Institutes (IIS), Cooperative Research Centers (CIC), and technological centers of the Basque Network of Science, Technology and Innovation established as a joint venture with BRTA.
• It is required to have administrative residence in a municipality of the Basque Autonomous Community on December 31, 2025.
• The minimum average grade depends on the field of knowledge: Arts and Humanities 7.00; Sciences 6.50; Social and Legal Sciences 6.70; Engineering and Architecture 6.00; Health Sciences 6.70.

Dedication and conditions

The dedication to the collaboration will be between 6 and 15 hours per week, always within the school schedule from 08:00 to 20:00. Projects must be based on core or compulsory subjects of the study plan and must be supported by the research group or host center.

The grant is purely formative in nature and will not create any legal-labor relationship between the beneficiary and the Basque Government, the university, or the center. The grant is incompatible with any other grants called by any other public or private entity for the same purpose, and breaking this incompatibility will result in the loss of the right to collect the grant.

Applications and deadlines

Applications must be submitted electronically, through the Basque Government’s electronic office. The prescribed period will begin the day following its publication in the BOPV and will last for one month, that is, from September 18 to October 17, 2026.

To carry out the evaluation, a selection committee will be formed:

• M.ª Eugenia Santos Urdiain, University Manager, chairperson; Eneko Galletebeitia Laka, substitute.
• Cristina Peromingo Castro, University Technician, member; Meritxell Collelldemont Blanch, substitute.
• Ane Ayastuy Gallastegui, University Technician, member and secretary; Ibai Arruza Crespo, substitute.

Resolution and payment

Each scholarship is subject to a competitive call. In the case of University System research groups, applications will be ranked according to a combination of 80% of the average grade and 20% of the group’s score; in the case of BERC, IIS, CIC, and technological centers, according to the average grade of the file.

The Vice-Minister of University Policy will issue two resolutions within six months, one for each modality. In modality A, payment will be made in two installments (30% at the beginning and 70% at the end); in modality B, there will be a single payment. Renunciation must be made before December 15, 2026, for modality A, and before May 15, 2027, for modality B.

This call aims to promote the research initiation of university students, and these 190 places provide them with a direct opportunity to gain their first experience in groups and centers of the Basque research network, with a schedule compatible with their studies.
