The University of the Basque Country has appointed three new tenured professors in Chemical Engineering, Programming and Computer Systems, and Modern History. The decision was contained in three independent resolutions, published on October 27, 2026, in issue number 205 of the Official Gazette of the Basque Country, under the “Appointments, situations, and changes” heading of the Authorities and Personnel section. The appointees have a period of twenty working days to formalize their respective employment contracts, counted from the day following the publication in the Official State Gazette.

The university rectorate issued the first two resolutions (2026/4503 and 2026/4504) on October 14 and the third (2026/4505) on October 15, all dated in Leioa. The signatory is Efrén Areskurrinaga Mirandona, Vice-Rector for Teaching and Research Personnel, acting under the representation granted by the Rectorate Resolution of January 30, 2025 (BOPV, February 19, 2025). The three appointments share the same characteristics: a bilingual language profile and full-time dedication.

Chemical Engineering position

The first resolution (2026/4503) has appointed Maite Artetxe Uria as a tenured professor, following a competition for university teaching staff. The position was called by the Resolution of January 13, 2026, which was published in both the Official State Gazette and the autonomous gazette on January 22, 2026; the process extended from that call until mid-October.

  • Name: Maite Artetxe Uria.
  • Field of knowledge and department: Chemical Engineering.
  • Center: Faculty of Science and Technology.
  • Position code: TUC8L1 – D00069-26.
  • Subject of the profile: “Reactor Design”.
  • Language profile: bilingual. Dedication: full-time.

Computer Science and Modern History

The other two appointments have the same origin: the competition called by the Resolution of June 16, 2026, published in the Official State Gazette on June 23, 2026, and in the BOPV on July 7. Xabier Larrucea Uriarte has been appointed in the field of Programming and Computer Systems, and Javier Esteban Ochoa de Eribe in Modern History; one in resolution 2026/4504, the other in resolution 2026/4505.

  • Xabier Larrucea Uriarte: field of knowledge and department Programming and Computer Systems; center Bilbao Engineering School; position code TUC8/1 – D00141-35; subjects of the profile “Enterprise Management Software”, “Cybersecurity”, and “Software Quality Control and Assurance”.
  • Javier Esteban Ochoa de Eribe: field of knowledge Modern History; department Philology and History; center Faculty of Arts; position code TUC8/1 – D00351-24; subjects of the profile “Modern History I” and “Foundations of the Modern Age”.

The teaching load of one position is organized around software management for companies, cybersecurity, and software quality, on one hand, and the foundations of the Modern Age, on the other. The tenure codes specify the body: TUC8/1 and TUC8L1 belong to the body of tenured university professors.

From calls to appointment

Three resolutions use the same formula: the rector “formalizes” the hiring, and does not include the competition score or merits; those are in the call resolutions. The documents refer to the competition for access positions for the university’s official body, and the appointment is made as a tenured professor, with full dedication.

Each resolution describes a single position, with specific knowledge areas, department, center, code, and subjects, which clearly indicates which profile the new appointee will fill. All three were signed in the municipality of “Leioa,” at the university’s administrative headquarters, and the signature is delegated to the vice-rector.

Twenty working days to formalize the contract

The period is stated identically in the three resolutions: twenty working days, counted from the day following the publication in the Official State Gazette, to formalize the corresponding employment contract. The reference publication site is the State gazette, even though the appointment was also included in the Official Gazette of the Basque Country; therefore, the start of the period is according to the calendar of the State publication.

The resolutions include the identity document numbers of the interested parties partially hidden, according to standard data protection practice, and do not add any other conditions for the formalization of the contract. Since the calls were published in January and June 2026, these appointments constitute the final step of the process for the start of the academic year.

The three permanent positions strengthen teaching stability in three different areas of the university: chemical industry and process engineering, software and cybersecurity training, and historical research of the Modern Age. The new appointees have a period of twenty working days to sign the contract, and after that period, the effective filling of the positions will begin, in the middle of the school year.
