European Parliament backs Vujčić as ECB Vice-President for eight years

Por FactBox Admin

The European Parliament has issued a favourable opinion on the appointment of Boris Vujčić as Vice-President of the European Central Bank (ECB) for a term of office of eight years, with effect from 1 June 2026. The decision, adopted by Parliament on 10 March 2026, was published in the C series of the Official Journal of the European Union on 26 August 2026 under reference C/2026/4024.

The opinion responds to a consultation launched by the European Council, which by letter of 30 January 2026 asked Parliament to assess the nomination. It follows the Council’s recommendation of 26 January 2026 (reference N10-0003/2026), and the appointment is expected to shape the direction of European monetary policy for the coming years.

The appointment is governed by Article 283(2), second subparagraph, of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, which requires the European Council to consult the European Parliament before appointing the ECB’s President, Vice-President and the other members of its Executive Board. Parliament’s opinion was prepared under Rule 134 of its Rules of Procedure, on the basis of the report of its Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (reference A10-0038/2026).

The evaluation also weighed the need for the full independence of the ECB, as set out in Article 130 of the Treaty. The committee examined the candidate’s credentials against the requirements of Article 283(2) and in the light of that independence principle.

Scrutiny of the candidate

The Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs carried out a detailed assessment of Boris Vujčić’s suitability for the post. As part of that process, the committee received:

  • a curriculum vitae from the candidate;
  • his replies to a written questionnaire;
  • the record of a hearing held on 25 February 2026, at which he made an opening statement and answered questions from committee members.

Decision and next steps

In its decision, Parliament delivered a favourable opinion on the Council recommendation to appoint Boris Vujčić as Vice-President of the ECB, and instructed its President to forward the decision to the European Council, the Council and the governments of the Member States. The appointment takes effect on 1 June 2026 for a full eight-year term.

The confirmation of a new Vice-President matters directly to European citizens, since the ECB’s Executive Board steers interest-rate policy, inflation control and financial stability across the euro area. With Boris Vujčić set to take office, the institution gains a senior figure whose mandate will span a critical period for the single currency and for the transmission of monetary policy to households and businesses.
