Extracurricular sport: 4.7 million for children and young people in Barcelona

Por FactBox Admin

The Barcelona Sports Institute (IBE) has published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Barcelona (BOPB) the specific ordinary call for grants so that children and young people aged 6 to 17 can play sports outside school hours during the 2026-2027 academic year, with a budget of €4,700,000. The call, approved by resolution of the presidency of the Barcelona Sports Institute of 29 July 2026, was published on 30 July 2026 with reference CVE 202610128570 and file number 25S00768.

The programme is part of the system of grants for children and young people for extracurricular activities in the cultural, sports and summer holiday fields, regulated by the bases approved by the Government Commission on 27 November 2025 and published in the BOPB on 1 December 2025. The expenditure is authorised by agreement of the Government Commission of 30 December 2025 and is financed under budget item 0003-48001-34112 of the Barcelona Sports Institute: €3,760,000 from the 2026 budget and €940,000 from the 2027 budget. The resolution bears the signature of the delegated secretary Manel Gómez València.

A two-phase procedure

This call is the second phase of the grant award procedure. In the first, the general call, it is determined which household units may be beneficiaries and they are assigned a level of aid of up to 30%, 60% or 90% of the cost of the activity.

  • Only families that have obtained a level of aid in the general call, with a code assigned for each child, can request the grant.
  • Children must have been born between 1 January 2009 and 31 December 2020.
  • Young people with a recognised disability of 33% or more can receive the grant up to two years beyond the maximum age (born between 2007 and 2020).
  • The activity must be carried out in an entity accredited by the Barcelona Sports Institute and must appear on the website plaesportescolarbcn.cat; the list of accredited entities was published in the BOPB on 21 July 2026.

How and when to request the grant

The application is submitted preferably at the electronic office of the Barcelona City Council, without needing a digital certificate, and telephone 010 offers support and assistance to complete the procedure. An application must be submitted for each child, and only one per child is accepted: the last one submitted invalidates all previous ones.

  • Submission period: from 9:00 am on 15 September 2026 until 11:59 pm on 8 October 2026.
  • Applications submitted outside this period will not be admitted for processing.

Amount and payment of grants

The amount of each grant is calculated from the cost of the activity, the percentage assigned to the household unit, the economic endowment of the campaign and the number of applications, based on maximum subsidiable prices per academic year.

  • 220 euros without competition and 275 euros with competition, in educational centres or public spaces.
  • 320 euros without competition and 400 euros with competition, in sports centres or sports facilities.

The call may be extended by up to an additional 200,000 euros (up to a maximum of 4,900,000 euros) in accordance with article 58 of Royal Decree 887/2006, of 21 July, approving the regulations of the General Subsidies Law. Payment is made to the accredited entity, which receives 80% of the amount once the resolution is published and the remainder when it justifies the children’s attendance at the activity.

Resolution and notification

The body instructing the procedure is the Directorate of Sports Promotion and Events, and the body competent to resolve is the presidency of the Barcelona Sports Institute. The final resolution must be issued within a maximum of six months from the end of the application period and will be notified by publication in the BOPB; the lack of resolution entitles interested parties to consider the application rejected by administrative silence.

With 4.7 million euros, the call aims to ensure that the family’s economic situation does not prevent any child or young person in Barcelona from playing sport outside school during the 2026-2027 academic year. The grant covers registration in activities of accredited entities and is paid directly to these entities, which must justify its use.
