Atomic Energy renews its board of directors for the 2026-2028 period

The Atomic Energy Commission of Costa Rica has integrated its new Board of Directors for the 2026-2028 period, with eight representatives from state universities and the ministries of Economy, Agriculture, Foreign Affairs, and Health. The agreement is contained in Board of Directors Minutes No. 08-2026 dated September 8, 2026, and was published in La Gaceta No. 177 on Monday, September 21, 2026, page 60, with the official reference IN202601126627. The integration is effective from September 9, 2026, to September 30, 2028.

The Atomic Energy Commission of Costa Rica is the body that leads the peaceful use of radioactive material in the country. The appointment was adopted based on the powers conferred by Law No. 4383, Basic Atomic Energy Law for Peaceful Uses, of August 14, 1969, and its amendments, according to the official text.

The agreement became final and was signed by Dr. Frank Rodríguez Mora, Director General of the institution. The publication was made once in the official gazette.

Composition of the new board of directors

The board is headed by the State Distance University in the presidency and by the Costa Rica Institute of Technology in the vice presidency. The secretariat fell to the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Commerce; the treasury, to the National University of Costa Rica; and the comptrollership, to the University of Costa Rica.

The three voting positions were assigned to the ministries of Agriculture and Livestock, Foreign Affairs and Worship, and Health, such that the leadership of the organization combines four state universities and four portfolios of the Executive Branch.

Validity and scope of the agreement

The agreement is effective as of September 09, 2026, and extends until September 30, 2028, a two-year period covering the leadership of the regulatory body for the peaceful use of radioactive material. The publication was made in the Decentralized Institutions section of La Gaceta No. 177, corresponding to Monday, September 21, 2026.

The official text does not detail substitutions or additional modifications to the board’s structure, and is limited to recording the eight positions with their holders and the entities they represent.

The renewal of the Board of Directors defines who leads the Atomic Energy Commission of Costa Rica over the next two years, in a sensitive area such as the regulation of radioactive material and its peaceful use. The composition distributes representation among four state universities and four ministries, giving the higher education institutions half of the seats on the governing body.
