El Conservatorio Superior de Madrid impartirá Flamenco desde 2027

The Regional Ministry of Education, Science and Universities of the Community of Madrid has authorized the Royal Superior Conservatory of Music of Madrid to teach the specialty of Flamenco within its itinerary A. Flamencology, an expansion of the academic offer that will take effect from the start of the 2027-2028 academic year. The measure is detailed in Order 3206/2026, of August 28, published in the Official Gazette of the Community of Madrid number 216, of September 10, 2026 (p. 31), with official reference BOCM-20260910-9.

An expanding academic offer

The order modifies Order 175/2013, of January 31, regarding the implementation of the curricula for Higher Artistic Education in the Community of Madrid, which had already authorized the center to teach the specialties of Composition, Conducting, Musicology, Pedagogy, and Performance. Since then, successive provisions have completed the conservatory’s catalog:

  • Order 22/2019, of October 29, authorized the specialty of Sonology and incorporated the viola da braccio into Performance Itinerary C.
  • Order 2203/2022, of August 3, added the historical singing modality to the same itinerary.
  • Order 2744/2024, of June 11, authorized the implementation of the Production and Management specialty.
  • Order 1996/2026, of May 13, incorporated plucked instruments and the baroque oboe and baroque bassoon modalities.

The regulatory framework of flamenco

The new specialty is supported by a regulatory framework that recognizes flamenco as higher artistic education. At the state level, Royal Decree 707/2011, of May 20, created the Flamenco specialty in Music Degree programs and regulated its basic content, within the framework of Law 1/2024, of June 7, and Royal Decree 1614/2009, of October 26. At the regional level, Decree 10/2026, of February 11, of the Governing Council, modified Decree 36/2011, of June 2, to introduce the Flamenco specialty and update the Performance itineraries. Additionally, Order 2499/2026 incorporated the specific entrance exam for the Flamenco specialty in Higher Artistic Education Music Degrees.

What is authorized and when it enters into force

Order 3206/2026 reforms the seventh provision of Order 175/2013, such that the Royal Superior Conservatory of Music of Madrid will teach the Flamenco specialty with its itinerary A. Flamencology, alongside the other specialties already in effect. The provision, signed in Madrid on August 28, 2026, by the Director General of Artistic Education, Miguel Olite Lumbreras, by delegation of the regional minister, establishes that the order will take effect from the start of the 2027-2028 academic year.

Relevance for readers

The incorporation of flamenco into the Madrid conservatory consolidates the public offering of higher artistic education in the region and opens a regulated academic pathway for a discipline declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Interested students will be able to access the new specialty starting next academic year, with a specific access test already regulated, which expands the degree-level training options in music within the Community of Madrid.
