El Consell de Govern crea l'IES Maioris per descongestionar S'Arenal

The Governing Council of the Balearic Islands approved on October 23, 2026, the Agreement creating the Majoris Secondary Education Institute, in the municipality of Llucmajor. The center, with code 07017121, is published in the Official Gazette of the Balearic Islands (BOIB) no. 138, of October 29, 2026, with order number 10765 and official document reference 1231409. The agreement takes effect from the day following its publication.

The creation of public centers corresponds to the autonomous government according to article 17 of Organic Law 8/1985, of July 3, regulating the right to education, article 102 of Law 1/2022, of March 8, on education of the Balearic Islands, and article 3 of the annex of Decree 4/2023, of February 13, modified by Decree 42/2025, of August 1. The proposal was submitted by the counselor of Education and Universities, and the agreement is signed by the secretary of the Governing Council, Antònia Maria Estarellas Torrens, and the president, Margarita Prohens Rigo.

A municipality with two institutes and growing pressure

Llucmajor currently has two public secondary education centers, IES Llucmajor and IES S’Arenal. In the 2026-2027 academic year, IES Llucmajor enrolls 711 compulsory secondary education students and 217 baccalaureate students, and has two modular classrooms; IES S’Arenal serves 590 ESO students, 141 baccalaureate students, and 62 vocational training students.

According to the agreement, IES S’Arenal presents “high enrollment pressure,” both in terms of the number of students and the territorial area it covers. The new institute is intended to allow the redistribution of enrollment in the municipality, reduce the lines of the existing center, and offer places closer to the Maioris area and its surroundings.

From CEIP to the institute: how assignments are distributed

IES S’Arenal has four early childhood and primary education schools assigned to it:

  • CEIP s’Algar, with two lines
  • CEIP Son Verí, which adds one line
  • CEIP Badies, in the area closest to the new institute
  • CEIP Urbanitzacions, also close to Maioris

The two centers closest to Maioris total four lines, while s’Algar and Son Verí total three. This distribution allows for the planning of a reorganization coherent with the capacity of the two institutes, such that IES S’Arenal will go from the current seven lines to three.

Ceded land, works underway, and 16 ESO units

The Plenary of the Llucmajor City Council, in an ordinary session on August 6, 2014, ceded to the department competent in education matters a municipal plot of 11,105 m², with cadastral reference 8575403DD7687N0001PZ, located at Carrer de la Galiota, 2-10, in the Maioris Dècima urbanization (CP 07609), classified as educational equipment on urban land.

The works were declared of regional interest by the Agreement of the Governing Council of August 23, 2024 (BOIB no. 111, of August 24, 2024), in accordance with articles 7 and 8 of Decree-law 1/2018, of January 19. The construction project was authorized by Agreement of December 13, 2024 (BOIB no. 164, of December 14, 2024), following the report of the General Directorate of Educational Planning and Management of November 22, 2024, regarding structural and recurring expenses.

On October 15, 2026, the head of the Educational Planning Service issued a favorable report justifying the need for the center. Construction began in the third quarter of 2025 and is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2027. The new center is projected with:

  • 16 compulsory secondary education units
  • 1 specific educational unit in an ordinary center (UEECO)

The agreement empowers the Minister of Education and Universities to adopt the necessary measures to execute it. For the families of Maioris, Badies, and Urbanitzacions, the decision means having a reference institute closer to home and, for the municipality as a whole, a reorganization of assignments that eases the saturation of S’Arenal starting from the school year in which the new center is operational.
