The Cabildo de La Palma announces housing grants for university students

Por FactBox Admin

The Island Council of La Palma has approved the call for grants to compensate for the additional cost of accommodation for university students studying outside the island during the 2025/2026 academic year. The measure, adopted through Resolution No. 2026/9215, dated September 2, 2026, by the Full Corporate Member for Education, is published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife number 107, dated September 7, 2026, on page 25419.

The call, identified in the National Grants Database with the code BDNS 927698, is published in accordance with the provisions of articles 17.3.b and 20.8.a of the General Grants Law 38/2003, of November 17. The full text can be consulted in the National Grants Database.

Purpose and beneficiaries

The purpose of these grants is to guarantee the effective exercise of the right to education for university students from La Palma with fewer economic resources, by compensating for the additional cost of rental housing outside the island. This is a complementary aid to alleviate the impact of rising rental prices for the group of students in situations of economic vulnerability who must travel outside the island for academic reasons, an added cost to the double insularity.

Beneficiaries may be students with habitual and uninterrupted residence in any municipality of the island of La Palma for at least the last two years, using October 1 of the year in which the school year referred to in the call begins as the final date of the calculation.

Amount and regulatory bases

The amount of credit allocated to the call amounts to 100,000.00 euros, charged to budget application 326.481.03 and operation No. 12026000118050 of the current budget. Exceptionally, in accordance with article 58.2 of Royal Decree 887/2006, of June 21, which approves the Regulation of Law 38/2003, an additional amount of up to 20% more may be set without requiring a new call, subject to the prior approval of the corresponding budget modification.

The regulatory bases are the Regulatory Bases and Annexes for Study Scholarships, approved by the Plenary Commission of Culture, Education, Cultural Heritage and Crafts of the Island Council of La Palma in an ordinary session held on July 1, 2026, published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife number 83, dated July 13, 2026.

Deadline and submission of applications

The deadline for the submission of scholarship applications will be 20 business days, starting from the day following the publication of the summary of the call for the 2025/2026 academic year in the Official Gazette of the Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The Annexes established in the guidelines must accompany the application form.

The resolution, signed in Santa Cruz de La Palma on September 2, 2026, bears the signature of Jesús María Armas Domínguez, Full Corporate Member of the Area of Natural Environment, Ecological Transition and Fight against Climate Change, Education, Training and Employment, and Craftsmanship.

Relevance of the measure

The call directly benefits families from La Palma with university students who have relocated, who must face the cost of rent outside the island as a consequence of double insularity. With a budget of 100,000 euros, expandable by up to 20%, the Cabildo seeks to alleviate the economic burden on students with fewer resources and guarantee equal opportunities in access to higher education.
