Badajoz Provincial Council auctions 40 Merino sheep at the Zafra Fair

The Provincial Council of Badajoz will sell 40 white merino ewes from the La Cocosa estate at the livestock auction of the International Livestock Fair and 573rd Traditional San Miguel Fair of Zafra, which will be held between October 1 and 6, 2026. The Official Gazette of the Province of Badajoz (BOP) No. 178, dated September 17, 2026, publishes announcement 3614/2026, which contains the approval decree of the file and the specifications for the sale.

The promoting body is the Functional Area of Rural Development, Demographic Challenge, and Tourism of the Provincial Council of Badajoz, which manages the La Cocosa estate and collaborates in the maintenance of the province’s native livestock and the genetic improvement of merino sheep and lampiño pig herds. The decree is signed by Carmen Yáñez Quirós, second vice-president and delegated deputy of the Functional Area of Sustainable Economy, Strategic Procurement, and Heritage, by virtue of BOP decree number 206, supplement I, dated October 29, 2025. The operation is supported by Law 33/2003, of November 3, on the Heritage of Public Administrations, and Royal Decree 1373/2009, of August 28, which approves its General Regulation.

Forty ewes in four lots

The Council’s participation is structured as a livestock breeder in the auction organized by the National Association of Merino Livestock Breeders. The file was initiated on September 2, 2026, based on a report from the estate manager and a proposal from the acting director of the area, Isidro Lázaro Santos. Favorable reports from the General Secretariat and the Comptroller’s Office were received on September 3 and 10, 2026, respectively.

The livestock is declared as surplus stock and is distributed into four lots of ten animals each:

• 40 white merino ewes, all with the ARR/ARR genotype.
• Four lots of 10 animals, identified from Lot 1 to Lot 4.
• Each specimen has an individual electronic identification listed in Annex I of the specifications.

Starting price and bidding system

The specifications set a starting price of 1,800.00 euros for each lot of ten ewes, which equals 180.00 euros per animal. The award system is “open bidding” (puja a la llana), with offers equal to or higher than the starting price and minimum increments of 10.00 euros; bids below the base price of each lot will not be accepted.

The sale is subject to and not exempt from VAT, according to the report from the General Directorate of Taxes dated May 5, 2009; therefore, the successful bidders will pay the hammer price plus 10% VAT. The provision of a provisional guarantee will not be necessary, in accordance with article 106.1 of the LCSP.

How to participate and livestock removal

Natural or legal persons with the capacity to act may participate; they must prove their identity before the auction board and present the required documentation:

• ID, passport, or CIF, and proof of representation where applicable.
• Annex II, with the bidder’s details.
• Annex III, a responsible declaration stating that they are not subject to the prohibition of article 95.2 of Royal Decree 1373/2009.
• Annex IV, data protection document.

Payment may be made by bank card using the POS terminal provided by the Provincial Council at the fairgrounds, or by transfer to account ES03 3009 0001 2025 4550 4629 at Caja Rural de Extremadura. If payment is made by card, the livestock will be removed directly from the fair facilities; if paid by transfer, they will be collected at the La Cocosa farm, on the EX-310 Badajoz-Valverde de Leganés road, km 14.500, with expenses borne by the successful bidder.

The auction will be held in Zafra coinciding with the fair event, at the fairground facilities or where the organizing association publishes, and it could be held online for health reasons. Any modification will be published by both the association and the Provincial Council.

The call is of interest to the livestock sector of the province because it brings to market select white merino specimens with a genotype resistant to scrapie, coming from a public farm dedicated to genetic improvement. For breeders, the Zafra event offers an opportunity to renew livestock at an appraised price and with terms and conditions known in advance.
