Denmark grants royal assent to law prioritising electricity grid capacity
Por FactBox Admin

His Majesty the King has granted royal assent to an act amending Denmark’s Electricity Supply Act and its Act on the Promotion of Renewable Energy, introducing prioritisation of capacity in the electricity grid and appropriate connection to the grid. The assent was given in the Council of State on 7 October 2026 at Christiansborg Palace, and the decision is published in Statstidende on 9 October 2026 under reference S07102026-295.
The notice appears in the gazette’s “Diverse” section under the heading “Stadfæstelse af love” — the formal record that a bill has received royal assent and become law. The published short title of the act is: “Act amending the Electricity Supply Act and the Act on the Promotion of Renewable Energy (Prioritisation of capacity in the electricity grid and appropriate connection to the electricity grid, etc.)”.
What the act changes
The act amends two central energy statutes:
- the Electricity Supply Act (lov om elforsyning), which governs the Danish electricity sector and grid operation;
- the Act on the Promotion of Renewable Energy (lov om fremme af vedvarende energi), which sets the framework for renewable generation.
Its stated purpose, as recorded in the title, is twofold: prioritisation of capacity in the electricity grid, and appropriate (hensigtsmæssig) connection to the grid. The gazette notice does not set out individual sections, entry into force or transitional rules.
The formal procedure
Royal assent was granted in the Council of State on 7 October 2026, held at Christiansborg Palace. The announcement is published in Statstidende on 9 October 2026, and the official reference of the notice is S07102026-295.
Related energy legislation
The same issue of Statstidende carries a separate confirmation notice, S07102026-289, in which the King confirmed assent previously given to a long list of acts. Among them is an act amending the Electricity Supply Act on the simplification of rules for solar cell installations on public buildings, whose assent was given at Amalienborg on 8 September 2026. Read together, the two notices show electricity and renewable-energy legislation reaching the final stage of the Danish legislative process in the same period.
Who is affected
The changes concern the parties that operate and use the Danish electricity grid:
- grid operators, which will apply the new rules on prioritising capacity and on connecting new installations;
- solar and wind developers, whose projects depend on grid connection and available capacity;
- electricity consumers, who ultimately bear the cost and reliability consequences of grid congestion.
For readers, the practical significance lies in the sequencing of grid connections: the act provides the framework for deciding which projects obtain capacity first and how new generation is connected. The gazette notice confirms that the act is now law; the detailed rules and effective dates follow from the act itself.
