Czech National Bank issues 5000 Kč note for centenary

The Czech National Bank (ČNB) will issue from 22 September 2026 a 5,000 Kč banknote of the 2023 design carrying a commemorative overprint, announced in a decree published in the Sbírka zákonů (Collection of Laws) of the Czech Republic. The measure, signed by Vice-Governor prof. Dr. Ing. Frait, was adopted on 31 August 2026 and appears in issue 160 of 2 September 2026.

The decree is issued under § 22(1)(a) of Act No. 6/1993 Sb. on the Czech National Bank, as amended by Act No. 442/2000 Sb. and Act No. 89/2018 Sb. The banknote commemorates the 100th anniversary of the start of operations of the National Bank of Czechoslovakia (Národní banka Československá).

The commemorative overprint

The new banknote keeps the same parameters as the standard 5,000 Kč note of the 2023 design, but adds an overprint on the coupon of the obverse side. The overprint consists of a hot-stamped foil with nano-effects, in a silver metallic finish that shifts into other colour shades depending on the viewing angle and the incidence of light.

The main motif of the nano-effects is the ceremonial ČNB logo for the centenary, which carries the texts “ČNB”, “ČESKÁ NÁRODNÍ BANKA”, “100”, “2026”, “1926” and “NBČ” in negative form. The right part of the foil bears a portrait of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk in three-quarter profile from the left, together with a QR code.

Entry into force

The decree enters into force on 22 September 2026, the same day the banknotes are put into circulation. It was signed on behalf of the Governor by Vice-Governor prof. Dr. Ing. Frait.

For holders of cash and collectors alike, the commemorative note adds a security-enhanced, historically themed variant of the country’s highest-value banknote, linking the modern Czech currency to the centenary of the institution that first issued it a century ago.
