Four 21.69 MW batteries authorized in Altarejos to hybridize with photovoltaics
Por FactBox Admin

The General Directorate of Energy Policy and Mines, under the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, has granted prior administrative authorization and administrative construction authorization to four battery energy storage modules of 21.69 MW each, located in the municipality of Altarejos (Cuenca). The four resolutions, signed in Madrid on July 20, 2026, are published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Cuenca number 99, dated August 28, 2026.
Each module will be hybridized with an existing photovoltaic plant already owned by its promoter, forming hybrid installations with an installed capacity of 50 MW. The projects were requested on June 20, 2024, corrected on October 24, 2024, and processed in accordance with Royal Decree 1955/2000, of December 1, and Law 24/2013, of December 26, on the Electricity Sector.
The four modules and their promoters
The resolutions, identified by numbers 2052, 2053, 2054, and 2055, correspond to four promoting companies and their respective photovoltaic plants:
- NO. 2052 — Aspe module (file PFot-ALM-071), by GR Aspe Renovables, S.L.U., hybridized with the FV Aspe plant, 49.11 MW.
- NO. 2053 — Turbón module (file PFot-ALM-073), by GR Turbón Renovables, S.L.U., hybridized with the FV Turbón plant, 49.7 MW.
- NO. 2054 — Bañuela module (file PFot-ALM-072), by GR Bañuela Renovables, S.L.U., hybridized with the FV Bañuela plant, 49.7 MW.
- NO. 2055 — Aitana module (file PFot-ALM-074), by GR Aitana Renovables, S.L.U., hybridized with the FV Aitana plant, 49.11 MW.
Technical characteristics and evacuation
Each storage installation employs battery systems with an installed capacity of 21.69 MW, a storage capacity of 43.38 MWh, and a duration of 2 hours. The evacuation infrastructure includes a medium-voltage underground line at 30 kV connecting each module to the Complejo Altarejos 132/30 kV substation, the expansion of which is being processed in the Aitana module file.
The energy is fed into the transmission grid at the Villanueva de los Escuderos 400 kV substation, owned by Red Eléctrica de España, S.A.U., which updated the access and connection permits on June 17, 2024. The projects passed the simplified environmental impact assessment via a resolution dated May 7, 2025, published in the Official State Gazette number 114, dated May 12, 2025, which concluded that no significant adverse effects are foreseen if the imposed environmental measures are met.
Relevance for the province
The authorizations, which do not exhaust administrative remedies and are subject to an administrative appeal (recurso de alzada) before the Secretary of State for Energy within one month, consolidate Altarejos as a renewable hybridization hub in the province of Cuenca. The sum of the four modules adds nearly 87 MW of storage capacity to the existing photovoltaic plants, a significant step for the integration of renewables and for economic activity and employment in the rural areas of Cuenca.
