The General Directorate of Coasts and Management of the Canarian Maritime Space has granted Canarias Submarine Link, S.L. the occupation of 212,045.31 m² of maritime-terrestrial public domain assets for a term of 25 years for the canalink base 6 submarine telecommunications system. The decision is detailed in Resolution No. 788/2026, of September 9, 2026, which the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands publishes this Tuesday, November 3, in issue number 219, within section V. Announcements, under document number 3766.
The announcement, signed in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on October 14, 2026, by the Director General of Coasts and Management of the Canarian Maritime Space, Antonio Manuel Acosta Felipe, is issued in compliance with article 152.12 of the General Coastal Regulations, approved by Royal Decree 876/2014, of October 10. The file depends on the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands and provides public notice of a concession already resolved by the aforementioned governing body.
The operation does not occur in isolation. The same holder obtained in July 2026 the concession for the canalink base 4 and base 5 project, intended for the cables that will interconnect Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote, with 243,600 m² of surface area and a term of 30 years, according to Resolution No. 587/2026, of July 14, 2026, published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands no. 187, of September 17, 2026.
A link between El Hierro and Tenerife
The concession covers the occupation of the maritime-terrestrial public domain for the purpose of a submarine telecommunications system at two points of the Canarian coastline:
- Playa del Salto, in Tamaduste, municipal district of Valverde (El Hierro).
- Playa de Las Arenas, in Caletillas, municipal district of Candelaria (Tenerife).
The purpose declared in the resolution is the canalink with base 6 submarine telecommunications system, promoted by the company Canarias Submarine Link, S.L., which appears as the holder of the concession.
Term, extensions, and surface area
The granting term is twenty-five (25) years, extendable for periods of fifteen (15) years up to the maximum legal term. The extension is not automatic: it requires a prior request from the interested party and that the conditions that motivated the granting persist.
The granted surface area amounts to 212,045.31 m² of maritime-terrestrial public domain, a figure that appears explicitly in the published announcement.
Demarcation and economic fee
The announcement identifies the affected stretch of coastline between milestones M-60 and M-102 of the current demarcation DL-134-TF, approved by ministerial order of March 13, 2002, and referring to the municipal district of Santiago del Teide.
Regarding the fee, the concessionaire must pay the amount corresponding to the final fee to the Public Treasury and present the corresponding proof of payment to the Canary Islands Coastal Demarcation. The published text does not detail the economic amount of this settlement.
Impact for readers
The authorization consolidates the deployment of the canalink system in the archipelago and adds a connection to the network that touches two islands from different provinces, with an occupied area of 212,045.31 square meters and a renewable 25-year horizon. For the involved coastline, the resolution establishes the conditions for the use of the maritime-terrestrial public domain in Tamaduste and Caletillas and subjects the holder to the payment of the fee to the state Administration and the justification of payments to the provincial coastal services.
