Grant of public domain for sanitation in Vilanova and Cambados

The General Directorate of Renewable Energies and Climate Change of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of the Xunta de Galicia has granted the councils of Vilanova de Arousa and Cambados the occupation concession of 1,300.63 square meters of the maritime-terrestrial public domain for the improvement of sanitation in the Arousa estuary. The decision, adopted by resolution on August 10, 2026, was published in the Official Gazette of Galicia (DOG) number 167, on September 3, 2026, on page 47933.

The concession, with a term of 30 years and exempt from fees, is announced via a notice dated August 24, 2026, signed by the general director, Paula Mª Uría Traba, in compliance with article 152.12 of the General Coastal Regulations, approved by Royal Decree 876/2014, of October 10.

Surface area and distribution between the two councils

The total granted area is divided between the two municipalities of the Salnés region, which share the sanitation infrastructure along the estuary:

• Vilanova de Arousa: 508.23 m²
• Cambados: 792.40 m²
• Total: 1,300.63 m²

Conditions of the concession

The resolution, identified by reference RES-CONCPO-2026-004C, establishes the main conditions for the occupation of the maritime-terrestrial public domain:

• Holders: Council of Vilanova de Arousa and Council of Cambados
• Purpose: improvement of sanitation in both councils
• Term: 30 years
• Fee: exempt

Relevance for the Arousa estuary

The occupation of the maritime-terrestrial public domain will allow both councils to regularize and improve the sanitation infrastructures that support the Arousa estuary, one of the areas of highest environmental and productive value in Galicia. The fee exemption and the long term of 30 years facilitate the execution and amortization of the necessary works for the municipalities, with a direct impact on water quality and the lives of residents and activities linked to shellfish gathering and tourism in the region.
