École polytechnique: 431 French admissions set for 2027

The Ministry of the Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs has set the maximum number of French students admitted to the École polytechnique in 2027 at 431. The quota of 431 places is divided among nine streams, reflecting the diversity of access routes to the school’s competitive examination:
- 86 places in the mathematics and physics stream, computer science option (MP-Informatique);
- 77 places in the mathematics and physics stream, physics and engineering sciences option (MP-PSI);
- 22 places in the mathematics, physics, and computer science stream (MPI);
- 131 places in the physics and chemistry stream (PC);
- 56 places in the physics and engineering sciences stream (PSI);
- 10 places in the physics and technology stream (PT);
- 2 places in the technology and industrial sciences stream (TSI);
- 13 places in the biology, chemistry, physics, and Earth sciences stream (BCPST);
- 34 places in the French university stream (FUF).
The PC stream thus concentrates the largest number of places, followed by the MP-Informatique and MP-PSI streams, while the TSI stream has only two places.
Flexibility Granted to the Jury
The decree provides for a flexibility rule: any places that remain unfilled in one of the streams will be redistributed among the other streams, upon the jury’s proposal. This mechanism aims to prevent an unused quota from being lost, while leaving the jury a margin of discretion in the allocation of vacant seats.
