Quintero Port Captaincy sets new rules for the bay

The Quintero Port Captaincy has established new rules for use, operation, organization, and restrictions for the Bay of Quintero, through Resolution C.P. QUI. Ordinary No. 12000/427 Vrs., dated August 26, 2026. The provision, published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Chile No. 44,545 on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, comes into effect as of its publication and supersedes previous resolutions from 2023 and 2025.
The regulation emanates from the Ministry of National Defense, through the Undersecretariat for the Armed Forces, the Chilean Navy, and the General Directorate of the Maritime Territory and Merchant Marine (Directemar). Its objective is to harmonize the various maritime, port, industrial, fishing, nautical, sporting, recreational, and service activities carried out in that maritime space, safeguarding human life at sea, the safety of navigation, the aquatic environment, and strategic maritime-port infrastructure.
Scope and content of the resolution
The resolution regulates maritime zoning, navigation channels, and operational restrictions applicable within the limits of the Bay of Quintero, in the Valparaíso region. The full text of the regulation and its annexes are published on the Directemar website (www.directemar.cl, Local Resolutions AA.MM, CP Quintero).
The measure directly affects the industrial zone of Quintero-Puchuncaví, where the port, industrial facilities, and fishing and recreational activities coexist, and seeks to organize the coexistence of all these uses within the same maritime space.
Replaced regulations
The new resolution supersedes two previous provisions from the same captaincy:
- Resolution C.P. QUI. Ordinary No. 12,250/4 Vrs., dated June 9, 2023.
- Resolution C.P. QUI. Ordinary No. 12,600/27 Vrs., dated March 20, 2025.
With this, the captaincy unifies and updates the rules for the use and operation of the bay into a single regulatory body, incorporating current operational restrictions and zoning.
Signature and validity
The resolution was signed in Quintero on August 26, 2026, by Rafael Quijada Córdova, Fragata Captain LT. and Port Captain of Quintero, and endorsed by Joel Santelices Aravena, Second Lieutenant LT. and Acting Deputy Chief of the Quintero Port Captaincy. The regulation comes into effect as of its publication in the official bulletin.
The publication of these regulations reinforces the maritime authority’s control over one of the most sensitive bays of the central Chilean coastline, where industrial and port activity coexist with fishing and recreational use. For port operators, companies in the industrial zone, and the fishing communities of Quintero and Puchuncaví, the new regulation defines the navigation and operation rules they must follow; therefore, consulting them in full through the official channels of Directemar is key for the planning of their activities.
