Cantabria: aid announced for the conservation of native sheep and goat breeds

The Official Gazette of Cantabria (BOC) publishes this Friday, 14 August 2026, the extract of the resolution of the Regional Minister for Rural Development, Livestock, Fisheries and Food, María Jesús Susinos Tarrero, of 7 August 2026, announcing aid for the conservation and promotion of native sheep and goat breeds in Cantabria (reference CVE-2026-6463). The call, with a budget of €45,000 for 2026, is aimed at owners of sheep and goat holdings that practise extensive grazing. Applications may be submitted within one month from the day following the publication of the extract in the gazette.

The call is published in accordance with Articles 17.3.b and 20.8.a of Law 38/2003 of 17 November, General Law on Subsidies, and its full text may be consulted in the National Subsidies Database under identifier BDNS 924132. The aid will be awarded under a competitive selection procedure and on a de minimis basis, and is therefore subject to the limits established in Regulation (EU) 1408/2013 of 18 December, which regulates de minimis aid in the agricultural sector. The regulatory bases are set out in Order MED/3/2019 of 4 February, published in BOC No. 31 of 13 February 2019.

Beneficiaries and requirements

Any natural or legal person, including cooperative societies and agricultural processing companies, that is the owner of a sheep or goat livestock holding located in Cantabria may obtain beneficiary status. In addition, the following conditions must be met:

• The holding complies with the regulations in force on the environment, hygiene, animal welfare and health, and animal identification and registration.
• No serious or very serious penalty has been imposed for breach of those regulations in the year prior to submission of the application.
• Those who have received de minimis aid in the current fiscal year and in the previous two years must comply with the limits of Regulation (EU) 1408/2013.

Purpose and amount

The purpose of the call is to promote the conservation and breeding of animals belonging to pure breeds of meat aptitude or mixed aptitude on sheep and goat holdings in the Autonomous Community of Cantabria that practise extensive grazing. The maximum total amount is €45,000 for 2026, financed from budget item 05.04.412B.478 (Promotion of native sheep) of Law of Cantabria 4/2026 of 28 April, on the General Budgets of the Autonomous Community of Cantabria for 2026.

Deadline and submission of applications

Applications, addressed to the Minister of Rural Development, Livestock, Fisheries and Food in accordance with the standard forms included as Annexes I and II of the resolution, may be submitted within one month from the day following the publication of the extract in the BOC, that is, between 15 August and 14 September 2026. Submission may be made at:

• The Registry of the Ministry of Rural Development, Livestock, Fisheries and Food (C/ Albert Einstein, 2, PCTCAN, C.P. 39011 Santander).
• Any other registry or place provided for in article 134.8 of Law 5/2018, of 22 November, on the Legal Regime of the Government, the Administration and the Institutional Public Sector of the Autonomous Community of Cantabria.
• Parties required to interact electronically with the Administration must do so in accordance with article 135.2 of the same law.

The publication of this call strengthens support for a strategic sector for the rural environment of Cantabria, where extensive sheep and goat farming contributes both to the conservation of native breeds and to the maintenance of pastures and biodiversity. The announced €45,000 allows farmers to face the costs of maintaining purebred flocks in a context of pressure on farms and little generational renewal. The coming weeks are, therefore, the key period for holders to submit their application.
