Por FactBox Admin

The General Directorate of Physical Activity and Sport has issued a final resolution regarding the early call for grants to support the organization of official sporting events held in the Canary Islands, with a total credit of 200,000 euros. The resolution, signed on August 6, 2026, by the Director General María Rojas Estévez, is published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (Boletín Oficial de Canarias) no. 166, dated August 19, 2026, within section III. Other Resolutions.

The call was made through the Order of November 12, 2025, by the Counselor of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity, and Sports, on an early basis for the 2026 fiscal year. It is framed within the regulatory bases approved by the Order of July 6, 2020, which establish a competitive bidding regime and indefinite validity to support state, European, or world-level competitions included in the official calendars of the corresponding federations.

A process with 90 applications

Within the submission period, between April 27 and May 6, 2026, a total of 90 applications were submitted. The Evaluation Commission, constituted by Resolution no. 1154/2026 of June 10, issued its evaluation report on June 16, and the instructing body submitted the proposal that led to Provisional Resolution no. 1195/2026, dated June 19.

The sum of the approved applications amounted to 483,244.91 euros, well above the available credit, therefore the proportional distribution formula provided for in the regulatory bases was applied. The excess amount to be redistributed among the beneficiaries was 9,208.95 euros in the first instance and 430.01 euros in the second.

Beneficiaries and justification

The resolution definitively grants the subsidies to the entities listed in Annex I, which include sports clubs and Canarian federations of disciplines such as padel, sailing, badminton, triathlon, tennis, judo, volleyball, pétanque, basque pelota, underwater photography, and mountain running, among others. Among the beneficiaries are the Real Club Náutico de Tenerife, the Canarian Federation of Aerial Sports, the Canarian Federation of Underwater Activities, and the Club Deportivo Costa Arenas.

The majority of the files submitted the simplified justification account within the deadline. However, in several cases, irregularities were detected due to non-eligible expenses, which led to proportional reductions of the grant, ranging from 0.05% up to 97.74% in file 88/1/2025-1031105427. Additionally, four files were selected by random draw for the 5% sampling of the grants awarded, which were found to be correct.

Rejected applications

Annex II lists the rejected applications, including files excluded for failing to prove that the event is listed on an official calendar within the required scopes, due to duplication with another application, for failing to submit the acceptance within the deadline, or for having been submitted by a natural person. Penalties were also maintained regarding the type of competition criterion in several sailing and athletics files, as inaccuracies were found between the information initially declared and that alleged subsequently.

The resolution, which exhausts administrative remedies, may be appealed for reconsideration within one month or before the Contentious-Administrative Chamber of the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands within two months.

Impact on Canarian sport

With this distribution, the Government of the Canary Islands consolidates economic support for the organization of official competitions across all islands, a key backing to enable clubs and federations to maintain national and international sporting calendars without depending exclusively on their own resources.
