Canary Islands renews the members of the Higher Education Student Council

The Department of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands has arranged the dismissal and appointment of the titular and substitute members of the Council of Higher Education Students of the Canary Islands, the representative body for students of universities and higher education in the archipelago. The decision is adopted through the Order of August 11, 2026, signed by the counselor Migdalia María Machín Tavío, and is published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands number 169, dated August 24, 2026.

The renewal is in response to the expiration, in July 2026, of the two-year mandate period of the members appointed in July 2024. The body is governed by Decree 160/2018, of November 12, which creates and regulates the Council, and its composition is renewed based on proposals submitted by the rectorates and by the Directorate General of Vocational Training and Special Regime Education.

Renewal in public and private universities

The order dismisses the representatives of the University of La Laguna, the University of the Mid-Atlantic, the European University of the Canary Islands, and non-university education, and appoints their substitutes. At the University of La Laguna, Mr. Bentchey Juan Martín Martín and Ms. Carla Hernández González are appointed as titular members, and Ms. Carla Sosa Rivero and Mr. Daniel Montes de Oca Santana as substitutes.

• University of the Mid-Atlantic: titular Mr. Octavio Hernández Hierro; substitute Ms. Josemith Urbina Pinto.
• European University of the Canary Islands: titular Ms. Florinda Rodríguez Salazar; substitute Ms. Sara May Bacallado Illada.
• Fernando Pessoa University-Canaries: substitute Ms. Claudia Climent de Guindos.
• University of the Hesperides: titular Mr. Felipe Bosh Cardoso.
• Technological University of the Canary Islands: titular Ms. Lourdes Concepción Medina García; substitute Ms. Luviz Endrina Colmenares Campo.

New members of non-university education

In the field of non-university Higher Education, the order renews the representation of Higher Artistic Education, Professional Education in Plastic Arts and Design and Higher Level Sports, and Higher Level Vocational Training, in both public and private centers.

• Higher Artistic Education: titular Mr. Borja Cayetano Romero; substitute Ms. Lorna Estévez Enríquez.
• Plastic Arts and Design and Higher Level Sports: titular Mr. Antonio Lodovico Cattaruzzi; substitute Mr. Jorge Miranda Arencibia.
• Higher Level VT (public centers): titular Mr. Álvaro González Ponce; substitute Mr. Héctor Monzón Pérez.
• Higher Level VT (private centers): titular Mr. Nikos García Pulido; substitute Ms. Nayara García Mendoza.

Two-year mandate and continuity

Article 9.1 of Decree 160/2018 sets the duration of the appointment of each member and substitute at two years. The members appointed in November 2025, by means of Order 840/2025, maintain their mandate until their term is completed, and therefore are not affected by this renewal. The order expresses gratitude for the services provided by the outgoing members and recalls that representation must guarantee a balance of women and men in accordance with the Canarian equality Law 1/2010, of February 26.

The renewal ensures the continuity of the students’ voice in a key advisory body for Canarian university policy, which integrates public and private universities as well as non-university higher education. An optional appeal for reversal may be filed against the order within one month, or a challenge may be brought before the contentious-administrative jurisdiction within two months.
