Canary Islands grant 243,600 square meters for submarine cables between three islands

The Government of the Canary Islands has granted Canarias Submarine Link, S.L. the administrative concession to occupy 243,600 square meters of the maritime-terrestrial public domain for 30 years, in order to install submarine telecommunications cables interconnecting Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote. The decision corresponds to the General Directorate of Coasts and Management of the Canarian Maritime Space, under the Ministry of Public Works, Housing, and Mobility, and is materialized in Resolution No. 587/2026, of July 14, 2026. The Official Gazette of the Canary Islands publishes the agreement in issue number 187, corresponding to Thursday, September 17, 2026, with the official reference BOC-A-2026-187-3275.

Publicity of an already resolved concession

The announcement, dated August 6, 2026, is issued in compliance with the provisions of article 152.12 of the General Coastal Regulations, approved by Royal Decree 876/2014, of October 10, which mandates the publication of these types of coastal occupation authorizations. The resolution supporting it was issued nearly a month earlier, on July 14, 2026, by the same regional body that is now disseminating it.

The text appears in section V, “Announcements,” under the heading “Other announcements,” and bears the signature of the Director General of Coasts and Management of the Canarian Maritime Space, Antonio Manuel Acosta Felipe, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Seven landing points across four islands

The project, named the Canalink submarine telecommunications system base 4 and base 5, will be executed in the province of Las Palmas and comprises the following boundaries:

• Tinoca (Arucas): Bco. Tenoya-Los Muellitos (O.M. 15.2.2002).
• Ojos de Garza (Telde): Bco. Hondo-Gando (O.M. 17.4.1984).
• Matas Blancas (Pájara): Bco. Cuchillos-Los Verodes (O.M. 28.2.2008).
• Punta Arenas (Puerto del Rosario): Punta La Pared-El Encharco (O.M. 24.10.1994).
• Lomo Bristol (La Oliva): Corralejo Beaches (Caleta Bristol-Playa Vieja Matilde) (O.M. 6.10.1970).
• Afre (Playa Blanca, Yaiza): Piedra Vieja-Playa Cumplida (O.M. 2.7.2024).
• Playa Honda (San Bartolomé de Lanzarote): Piedra del Bajal-Guacimeta (O.M. 16.10.2008).

The points affect the coastal municipalities of Arucas, Telde, Pájara, Puerto del Rosario, La Oliva, Yaiza, and San Bartolomé de Lanzarote, distributed among Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote.

Surface area, term, and fee

The economic and temporal conditions of the concession are as follows:

• Area: 243,600 square meters of maritime-terrestrial public domain.
• Term: 30 years.
• Fee: the concessionaire is subject to the payment of the occupation fee which, where applicable, is fixed, liquidated, and collected by the General State Administration.
• Fee Framework: section C), ordinal 5, of Annex I of Royal Decree 713/2022, of August 30, on the transfer of State functions and services to the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands regarding the planning and management of the coastline.

A boost for the archipelago’s connectivity

The concession secures for three decades the seabed necessary to deploy two new sections of the Canalink system, a critical infrastructure for the connectivity of the eastern islands. By establishing the boundaries and the term, the agreement provides stable legal coverage for the installation of the cables and regulates the occupation of the coastline at seven specific points, with direct effects on the involved coastal municipalities and on the deployment of telecommunications in the archipelago.
