Belgium funds Monsana and Ghent hospital AI clinical trials

The Belgian federal government has awarded a €118,150 subsidy to Monsana BV and the Ghent University Hospital (Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Gand) to develop the project “Monsana.AI and Ghent University Hospital Innovating Clinical trials”. The grant is set out in a royal decree of 20 July 2026, published in the Moniteur belge of 24 August 2026 under reference C-2026/006290.

The decree was issued by the Federal Public Service for Public Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment (SPF SPSCAE / FOD VVVL), which is responsible for executing the measure. The subsidy is charged to budget allocation AB 25 51 91 32 00 02 for the 2026 budget year.

Allocation of the subsidy

The total amount is split between the two beneficiaries, with the larger share going to the private partner:

• Monsana BV (Rapertingenstraat 21, 3500 Hasselt) — €65,000
• Ghent University Hospital (Sint-Pietersnieuwstraat 25, 9000 Ghent) — €53,150

Monsana BV is required to transfer the hospital’s share of €53,150 directly to the Ghent University Hospital without delay and no later than 30 days after receiving it. The subsidy covers the period from 15 June 2026 to 1 December 2026.

Payment and reporting conditions

Payment is made in two tranches: a first instalment of up to 80% of the amount, and a second of up to 20%. The first payment requires a signed and dated claim submitted to the SPF SPSCAE Budget and Management Control Service, at the earliest after publication of the decree in the Moniteur belge. The second instalment requires a further claim together with an activity report and a financial overview with supporting documents, due no later than 31 December 2026.

The beneficiaries must use the subsidy exclusively for the execution of the project and justify its use at least annually through an activity report. Under Article 123 of the law of 22 May 2003 on the organisation of the federal budget and accounting, any unused portion must be reimbursed to the SPF SPSCAE.

Scope of the project

The objective of the subsidy is to support Monsana BV and the Ghent University Hospital in developing the “Monsana.AI and Ghent University Hospital Innovating Clinical trials” project. The grant falls within the remit of the agency tasked with stimulating innovation, scientific research and policy-support research on the reuse of health and healthcare-related data.

The activity report must cover the project’s philosophy and objectives, its achievements, a description of the personnel involved, and a financial balance of staff and other costs incurred.

The measure reflects the federal government’s commitment to financing artificial-intelligence innovation in medical research, backing a public-private partnership in Ghent aimed at modernising clinical trials through the reuse of health data.
