Tacoronte I Batteries: 10.4 MW of storage released for public consultation

The General Directorate of Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands has opened for public consultation the request for administrative authorization of the project “Tacoronte I battery energy storage system and its evacuation infrastructure”, in the municipality of Tacoronte (Tenerife). The announcement, signed on August 5, 2026, is published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands number 171, dated August 26, 2026, under file SE24/017.

The installation, promoted by Return Energy Storage Solutions, S.L., consists of an energy storage system using batteries in a stand-alone configuration, with an installed capacity of 10.4 MW and a total capacity of 42.864 MWh, with six hours of autonomy. The budget amounts to 10,072,116.24 euros (PEM).

Regulatory Framework and Competent Body

The procedure is processed in accordance with Decree 141/2009, of November 10, which regulates the administrative procedures for the execution and commissioning of electrical installations in the Canary Islands; Royal Decree 1955/2000, of December 1, regarding transport, distribution, and authorization activities for electrical installations; and Law 39/2015, of October 1, on the Common Administrative Procedure. The request for authorization, submitted on June 1, 2026, is addressed to the General Directorate of Energy as the competent body.

Technical Characteristics and Evacuation

In addition to the batteries, the project includes the necessary infrastructure to evacuate the stored energy through a 20 kV underground line that will connect the plant with the Tacoronte substation. The technical documentation was drafted by two engineers:

• Daniel Gómez León, Industrial Engineer, member no. 5,372 of the Official College of Industrial Engineers of Western Andalusia.
• Manuel Jesús Lara Sánchez, Civil Engineer (Caminos, Canales y Puertos), member no. 31,113.

The project is subject to a simplified environmental impact assessment.

Period for Allegations

For thirty calendar days, starting from the day following the publication of the announcement, any natural or legal person may examine the project and submit allegations. The documentation can be consulted at the Department’s office in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the Multi-Purpose Administrative Building I, Avenida Francisco La Roche, no. 35, 7th floor, by prior appointment requested via email at stgro.energia@gobiernodecanarias.org, or through the enabled web link. The announcement is signed by delegation of the Director General of Energy (Resolution no. 462/2026, of March 20, 2026) by the Head of the Energy Technical Area, Alberto Miguel Blasco Lorenzo.

Relevance for the Energy Transition

The initiative reinforces the Canarian commitment to energy storage, a key element for integrating renewable generation and guaranteeing grid stability in Tenerife. With six hours of autonomy, the plant will be able to shift energy toward peak demand, contributing to the reduction of dependence on fossil fuels in the archipelago.
