Por FactBox Admin

The General Directorate of Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands has opened for public consultation the request for administrative authorization of the project for the installation called “BESS Tucana VIII Tacoronte battery energy storage system”, with 4.7 MW, in the municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna (Tenerife). The announcement, dated August 24, 2026, is published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands number 178, of September 4, 2026, under file GE25/032.
The request for authorization, submitted on January 5, 2026, is processed in accordance with Decree 141/2009, of November 10, which regulates the administrative procedures for the execution and commissioning of electrical installations in the Canary Islands; Royal Decree 1955/2000, of December 1, on the authorization of electrical energy installations; and Law 39/2015, of October 1, on the Common Administrative Procedure of Public Administrations.
Technical characteristics of the project
The project, signed by Arcadio Domínguez Jiménez, of the Official College of Industrial Technical Engineers of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (member no. 3311), dated May 19, 2026, contemplates an energy storage system with a total installed battery capacity of 20.7 MWh and an autonomy of four hours. Its main data are:
- Installed power in inverters: 4x1.8 MVA, with a 7.4 MVA transformer.
- Occupied area: 389.87 m², with a total enclosure length of 79.54 m.
- 20 kV underground evacuation line of 800 meters (Al RH5Z1 12/20kV 240 mm² cable) from the sectioning and measurement center to the SE Geneto 20 kV substation.
- Budget: 4,932,662.26 euros (PEC).
The petitioner and owner of the installation is the company Tucana Batteries VIII, S.L. The project is subject to a simplified environmental impact assessment.
Period for allegations
The announcement is made public for general knowledge so that, within a period of thirty (30) days starting from the day following its publication, any natural or legal person may examine the project and submit any allegations they deem appropriate. The file can be consulted at the Department’s office in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the Usos Múltiples I administrative building, Avenida Francisco La Roche, no. 35, 7th floor, by appointment via the email stgro.energia@gobiernodecanarias.org.
The announcement is signed by the Head of the Technical Energy Area, Alberto Miguel Blasco Lorenzo, by delegation of signature from the Director General of Energy (Resolution no. 462/2026, of March 20, 2026).
Relevance for the energy transition
The installation reinforces electrical storage capacity in Tenerife, a key element for integrating renewable generation and stabilizing the grid against the variability of solar and wind production. With four hours of autonomy and a power output of 4.7 MW, the Tucana VIII BESS system will contribute to the decarbonization of the Canarian energy system, in line with the archipelago’s energy transition goals.
