Arlanza: green light for the modification of its specifications document
Por FactBox Admin

The Agricultural Technological Institute of Castilla y León (ITACyL) has issued a favorable decision regarding the request for a Union modification of the product specification for the Protected Designation of Origin «Arlanza», submitted by its Regulatory Council on March 2, 2026. The resolution, signed on September 2, 2026, by the general director of the Institute, David González Huerta, is published in the Official Gazette of Castilla y León number 174, dated September 8, 2026 (reference BOCYL-D-08092026-174-9).
The modification is processed under Regulation (EU) 2024/1143 of the European Parliament and of the Council, of April 11, 2024, on geographical indications for wine, spirit drinks, and agricultural products. The Regulatory Council of the PDO «Arlanza», recognized as a group of producers by resolution on May 9, 2024, approved the proposal with a sufficient majority of its Plenary and attached the justifying report, the new version of the product specification, and the single document.
A two-track procedure
Regulation (EU) 2024/1143 distinguishes between Union modifications, which are approved by the European Commission, and normal modifications, which are the responsibility of the Member States. Therefore, ITACyL has separated the processing of both blocks.
- Normal modifications already received a favorable decision via a resolution published in the Official Gazette of Castilla y León number 95, dated May 21, 2026.
- Union modifications were published in the Official State Gazette number 136, dated June 4, 2026, via a resolution dated May 25, 2026, which provided continuity to the procedure.
No opposition within the legal period
The resolution published in the BOE granted a period of two months, starting from the day following its publication, for any natural or legal person established or resident in Spain whose legitimate interests were considered affected to submit a statement of opposition. After the period elapsed without any opposition being registered, ITACyL has concluded the preliminary procedure and verified that the application meets the admissibility conditions and the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2024/1143.
The modified product specification and single document can be consulted on the official ITACyL website, in the section for protected designations of origin and geographical indications for viticulture.
Appeal and consultation
Against this resolution, which does not exhaust administrative remedies, an administrative appeal (recurso de alzada) may be filed before the Vice-Ministry of Community Agricultural Policy and Rural Environment within one month, counting from the day following its publication in the Official State Gazette.
The favorable decision represents a definitive step for the grape growers and wineries of the Arlanza region, in southern Burgos and northern Palencia, to adapt their production and processing regulations to the new community requirements, strengthening the competitiveness and recognition of one of the youngest wine denominations in Castilla y León.
