Aragón authorizes the Degree in Dentistry at San Jorge University starting in 2027

The Government of Aragon has authorized the implementation of the Bachelor’s degree in Dentistry by San Jorge University starting from the 2027-2028 academic year. The decision was adopted at the meeting of the regional Executive on September 9, 2026, and is published via Order ECU/1390/2026, dated September 16, in the Official Gazette of Aragon number 189, dated September 29, 2026 (official reference: BOA20260929016). The order, signed by the Minister of Education, Science, and Universities, Carmen M.ª Susín Gabarre, is limited to ordering the publication of the agreement, the text of which appears as an annex.

A procedure with favorable reports since 2025

The authorization culminates a file processed by the Directorate General for Universities of the Department of Education, Science, and Universities. The milestones accredited in the agreement are as follows:

• On October 24, 2025, the Directorate General for Universities —then part of the Department of Employment, Science, and Universities— issued a favorable report on the need and academic and social viability of the implementation, approved by Resolution on October 30, 2025.
• On June 23, 2026, the Aragon University Quality and Foresight Agency reported favorably on the request for verification of the curriculum.
• On July 23, 2026, the Curriculum Verification and Accreditation Commission of the Council of Universities issued a positive verification resolution for the curriculum.
• On July 27, 2026, San Jorge University submitted the request for implementation authorization to the Directorate General for Universities.
• On September 1, 2026, the Directorate General for Universities issued a proposal report stating that the file contains the necessary documentation and that the request meets the requirements of the applicable regulations.

The legal framework invoked includes Article 73 of the Statute of Autonomy of Aragon, Organic Law 2/2023, of March 22, on the University System, Royal Decree 822/2021, of September 28, Law 5/2005, of June 14, on the Organization of the University System of Aragon, and Decree 72/2023, of May 17, which regulates the authorization procedure for official degrees. The competence to implement official teaching in private universities corresponds to the Government of Aragon upon the proposal of the university, in accordance with Article 14 of Law 5/2005.

Without external internship agreements

The file addresses a particularity of the curriculum: the absence of internship agreements with external entities. Universidad San Jorge justified that this circumstance is due to the academic configuration of the degree, as the 24 ECTS of the subject “Integrated Dental Clinic” correspond to a mandatory subject that is developed entirely within the university’s own environment and not through external academic internships.

For this reason, the proposed report of September 1, 2026, concluded that it was not necessary to obtain a report from the general directorate competent in health training regarding the availability and adequacy of public resources for internships, and the hearing process was waived.

Monitoring and effects of the agreement

The agreement consists of three sections:

• First: authorize the implementation of the degree of Graduate in Dentistry by Universidad San Jorge starting from the 2027-2028 academic year.
• Second: entrust the Aragon University Quality and Prospective Agency with the monitoring and renewal of the teaching accreditation, in accordance with Article 85 of Law 5/2005 and Articles 29 and 35 of Royal Decree 822/2021.
• Third: establish the effects from the date of its adoption, order its publication in the Official Gazette of Aragon, its transfer to the Registry of Universities, Centers, and Degrees, and its notification to the requesting university.

The authorization expands the map of official degrees in Aragon with a new health education program and opens the way for Universidad San Jorge to incorporate Dentistry into its offering from the 2027-2028 academic year. For future students, the agreement establishes the timeframe for the first graduating class and confirms that the curriculum has already passed state verification; for the Aragonese university system, it consolidates the role of the Aragon University Quality and Prospective Agency in the monitoring and renewal of the accreditation of official degrees.
