Aragón opens opposition to the registration of the DOP Arroz de Aragón

The General Directorate of Innovation and Food Promotion of the Government of Aragon has publicized the application for the registration of the protected designation of origin “Arroz de Aragón” (Aragon Rice) and has opened the national opposition procedure, according to a resolution dated August 25, 2026, published in the Official Gazette of Aragon number 173, of September 7, 2026 (reference BOA20260907019).

The application was submitted on January 27, 2025, by the Association for the Promotion of Aragon Rice, which subsequently provided new documents to complete the file. The announcement is framed within section V (Announcements) of the gazette, under the other announcements section of the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food.

Regulatory Framework

The processing is based on Regulation (EU) 2024/1143 of the European Parliament and of the Council, of April 11, 2024, on geographical indications for wine, spirit drinks, and agricultural products. Article 10 requires the Member State to carry out a national opposition procedure with a minimum period of one month from publication.

At the regional level, Decree 5/2009, of January 13, of the Government of Aragon, establishes in its article 20 that the application shall be subject to public information through announcements in the Official Gazette of Aragon and in the Official State Gazette. The framework is completed by Royal Decree 189/2026, of March 11, which regulates the national opposition procedure.

Deadline and Form of Opposition

The opposition procedure remains open for two months, counted from the day following the publication of the resolution in the Official Gazette of Aragon. Any natural or legal person, established or legally resident in Spain, who considers their legitimate interests to be affected, may oppose.

• The reasoned statement of opposition must be addressed to the General Directorate of Innovation and Food Promotion.
• It may be submitted at any of the document registration units of the Government of Aragon.
• It is also accepted through any of the means provided for in article 16.4 of Law 39/2015, of October 1, on the Common Administrative Procedure.

The resolution, signed in Zaragoza on August 25, 2026, bears the signature on behalf of the Technical Secretary General, Adolfo Ballestín Cantín, by virtue of Order AGA/825/2024, of July 17.

The opening of this procedure represents a decisive step for Aragonese rice to obtain European recognition of differentiated quality, which would strengthen the protection of its origin and its commercial positioning. The outcome of the opposition process will determine whether the application continues its path toward definitive registration with the European Union, with the resulting benefit for the community’s producers and processors.
